Job summary

Canstaff is seeking a construction foreman to lead civil site operations in a dynamic family-run environment. You will supervise day-to-day activities, mentor a diverse crew, and ensure safety and quality on site.

Strong leadership, plan-reading, and communication skills are essential. NZQA or trade qualifications are advantageous, and a full NZ driver license is required.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in civil construction or a related field with site supervision or leadership responsibility.
  • Knowledge of civil construction methods, equipment, and health & safety requirements.
  • Exceptional communication, team leadership, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, supervise multiple tasks, and adapt to project demands.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate day-to-day operations of civil construction sites, ensuring work is completed on time and to spec.
  • Lead and mentor a diverse team of operators, labourers, and tradespeople, promoting best practice and development.
  • Oversee safety compliance, including toolbox talks and addressing hazards immediately.
  • Interpret and implement project plans, drawings and specs, liaising with engineers and project managers as required.
  • Manage resources including materials, equipment and personnel for optimal site productivity.
  • Monitor work quality, carry out inspections and resolve on-site issues.

Skills & Experience – Foreman and Civil Construction Supervisory Jobs
  • Proven experience in civil construction or a related field, with prior site supervision or leadership responsibility highly regarded.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of civil construction methods, equipment, and health & safety requirements.
  • Exceptional communication, team leadership, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret plans, supervise multiple tasks, and adapt to project demands.
  • Proficiency in daily site paperwork, reporting, and basic computer use.
  • A full New Zealand driver’s licence is essential; WTR endorsements, Site Safe, and relevant NZQA or trade qualifications are advantageous.
  • Physically fit and capable of working in outdoor, dynamic construction environments.
