Job description

Jora New Zealand will close on 9th September 2026. Thank you for being with us, we are cheering you on as you continue your career journey.

START YOUR TRADE WITH ONE OF NZ'S LEADING PUMP ENGINEERING TEAMS

Pumpspec Ltd is a family-owned business and one of New Zealand's leading industrial pump engineering companies. For over 18 years we've been trusted to supply, service and repair pumps for municipal (water and wastewater), industrial and building services clients.

We're looking for an Apprentice Fitter to join our workshop and train towards a recognised trade qualification in mechanical engineering, learning hands-on from one of the most skilled pump engineering crews in the country.

Why Build a Career in Pumps?
  • Pumps move the world - water, fuel, food, chemicals, everything. As long as liquids need moving (forever), this trade isn't going anywhere.
  • Pumps are everywhere. Water, food & drink, chemicals, mining, HVAC- your skills work in any industry, anywhere.
  • Robot-proof. Real tools, real problems, real hands-on fixes.
  • Billions being spent right now. Watercare's investing $15.2b in Auckland's water network over the next 10 years alone.
  • Tradies are in short supply. Qualify now, stay in demand for the rest of your career.
The Role

Real hands-on work from day one. Working alongside our experienced fitters, you will:

  • Pull pumps apart and play detective. Strip and assess everything from small submersibles to serious industrial gear, and work out exactly what's gone wrong.
  • Rebuild them back to life. Repair, reassemble and test pumps and motors - then see your own work go straight back into service.
  • Get real tool time in your hands. Welding, machining, lathes, mills - proper hands-on experience, not just watching from the sidelines.
  • Get off the bench sometimes. Help build pump sets and assist with on-site installations, seeing your work go into real plants and pump stations.
What We're Looking For

You do not need years of experience - but you do need the right attitude. If this sounds like you, we want to hear from you:

  • A born tinkerer. You've always pulled things apart to see how they work - cars, bikes, engines, anything mechanical.
  • Hungry to learn. You soak up knowledge, listen to the experienced crew, and are not afraid to ask questions.
  • Rock solid reliable. On time, every time - and happy to go the extra mile without being asked.
  • A genuine team player. You get on with the crew and look for ways to help out, not just get through your own list.
  • Up for the hard yards. Happy to get your hands dirty and take on the unglamorous jobs - every good fitter started there.
  • Fast and accurate. You understand that pace matters as much as precision - customers need their pumps back running.
  • Values-driven. Pride in your work, honesty and integrity, and quality you would be happy to put your name to.
  • Practically minded. A strong interest in engineering or mechanical work, with a knack for solving problems.
  • Sorted for getting to work. Own reliable transport and a full or restricted driver's licence.
What We Offer

A structured apprenticeship, backed all the way. Fully supported by Pumpspec from day one, with a genuine commitment to seeing you through to a fully qualified tradesperson.

  • Training from some of the best in NZ. Hands-on mentoring from an experienced, motivated crew who take real pride in their work - and enjoy what they do.
  • Real variety. You'll assist fitters working jobs end-to-end, building a genuine, well-rounded understanding of the trade.
  • A fully-equipped workshop to learn in. Lathes, mills, glass bead and garnet blasting bays, a welding bay, 'an engineer's playground.'
  • Out and about, not stuck on the bench all day. Some on-site work gets you out to see pumps installed and running in the real world.
  • Great team culture in a family-owned business.
