Job summary

Waterland in Bussum is seeking an IT Engineer to own and mature our Microsoft 365 environment and broader IT stack across the Netherlands and Europe. You will strengthen governance, security, compliance and end-user experience while supporting our hybrid IT landscape.

The role emphasizes hands-on administration of Azure, Intune/Autopilot, VPN and network security, plus backup and disaster recovery with Rubrik. You will collaborate with vendors and IT teams to drive secure, reliable IT operations.

Job description

We are seeking an IT Engineer (m/f/x) to join our Central Services IT team, supporting colleagues across the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Role summary

As an IT Engineer, you take ownership of the systems that keep Waterland’s IT environment secure, reliable and easy to use. The initial focus of this role will be on strengthening and maturing our Microsoft 365 environment, including governance, security, compliance, identity, endpoint management and collaboration services. The role will also contribute directly to our DORA and ISO 27001 readiness by improving controls, documentation, evidence, processes and operational follow-up. Over time, the role will continue to support continuous improvement across all our Technology and AI.

The ideal candidate will:

• Manage and improve Microsoft Azure, including virtual machines, networking, storage, identity, monitoring and cost optimisation.
• Maintain network and firewall infrastructure across locations, including switching, Wi-Fi, VPN, segmentation and perimeter security.
• Own backup, recovery and cyber resilience with Rubrik, including restore testing and DR readiness.
• Manage Windows devices with Intune and Autopilot, including provisioning, compliance, application deployment and patching.
• Take a leading role in maturing the Microsoft 365 E5 environment, including governance, Entra ID, Intune, Defender, Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, security, compliance and adoption.
• Work with management and team to manage key technology vendors, ensuring strong performance, value and accountability.
• Improve the end-user experience by resolving escalations, removing friction and increasing productivity.
• Provide hands‑on support to users and the IT support team when needed.
• Support IT governance and regulatory readiness, including DORA and ISO 27001, by improving documentation, controls, evidence collection, operational processes and follow‑up of audit actions.

As part of a small and efficient IT team, flexibility is important: other IT‑related tasks may arise, and we expect the team to take ownership where needed, working together internally and with our technology vendors to deliver practical solutions.

The IT Engineer will report to the IT Infrastructure & Operations Lead, also based in the Netherlands.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate is a hands‑on IT professional who combines strong technical knowledge with ownership, sound judgement and a clear focus on reliability, security and user experience.

• Strong hands‑on experience managing hybrid IT environments, including Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, identity, endpoints and core infrastructure.
• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft 365 E5, Entra ID, Intune, MDM and Autopilot, with the ability to improve configuration, security and adoption.
• Solid understanding of enterprise networking, firewalls, VPN, Wi‑Fi and segmentation, preferably with Cisco or Fortinet
• Experience with backup, recovery, disaster recovery and ransomware resilience; Rubrik experience is a plus.
• Able to take ownership of incidents, changes and improvements, from analysis through to implementation and follow‑up.
• Able to lead small to medium‑sized IT projects, coordinating planning, stakeholders, vendors, implementation and follow‑up.
• Analytical and pragmatic, with the ability to assess performance, cost, risk and business value before recommending improvements.
• Strong service mindset, with a focus on colleague productivity, user experience and practical solutions.
• Comfortable working with vendors and partners, including technical discussions, service quality, licenses, renewals and SLA follow‑up.
• Clear communication skills in English and the ability to explain technical topics to both IT and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Familiarity with ITIL‑based service management, information security and compliance principles; ISO 27001 or DORA experience is beneficial.

Preferred Certifications

Relevant certifications are beneficial, but proven hands‑on experience and the ability to apply knowledge in practice are valued more.
