Job summary

Orkim is seeking a Manager/Superintendent, Technical to oversee the technical management and reliability of vessels under Orkim’s fleet. The role ensures safe, efficient operation with cost control and compliance with Class, Flag State, and statutory requirements.

The incumbent will lead vessel technical monitoring, maintenance planning, repairs, dry-docking and spares management while coordinating with shipyards, authorities and internal teams to ensure fleet readiness.

Qualifications

• Possess a Class 1 Engineer Certificate of Competency (Unlimited) or equivalent.
• Candidates with a Class 2 Engineer Certificate of Competency (COC) or Diploma in Marine Engineering may be considered, subject to relevant experience and competency.

Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day technical operations and vessel reliability.
• Coordinate planned maintenance, repairs and dry-docking.
• Monitor spare parts and inventory within approved budgets.
• Ensure compliance with IMO, Classification Society, Flag State and other statutory requirements.

The Manager / Superintendent, Technical is responsible for overseeing the technical management, maintenance, repair and operational reliability of vessels under Orkim’s management. The role ensures that vessels are maintained in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner and remain compliant with applicable Class, Flag State, Port State, statutory and industry requirements.

The position is responsible for vessel technical monitoring, planned maintenance, repairs, dry-docking, surveys, spare parts management, technical incident investigation and cost control. The role also provides technical guidance and support to vessel crews and works closely with internal departments, shipyards, contractors, Classification Societies and relevant authorities to ensure fleet reliability and operational readiness.

Role Descriptions

1.Vessel Technical Operations & Monitoring

• Oversee and monitor the day-to-day technical operations, machinery performance and reliability of vessels under management.
• Provide technical guidance and support to vessel crews and ensure timely resolution of technical issues.
• Monitor vessel performance and implement measures to minimise vessel downtime and operational disruption.
• Conduct vessel visits and technical inspections as required.

2.Planned Maintenance & Fleet Reliability

• Oversee the implementation and effectiveness of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) for vessel hull, machinery and equipment.
• Monitor maintenance records, breakdowns, recurring defects and fleet reliability.
• Ensure maintenance activities are properly planned, completed and documented within the required timeframe.
• Recommend and implement improvement measures to enhance vessel reliability and performance.

3.Spare Parts & Stores Management

• Review and oversee the planning and procurement of machinery spare parts, technical stores and consumables within approved budgets.
• Ensure adequate availability of critical spares to support safe and uninterrupted vessel operations.
• Monitor and maintain accurate fleet spare parts and inventory records.
• Ensure procurement activities are cost-effective and in accordance with company procedures.

4.Class, Statutory & Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure vessels comply with applicable IMO, Classification Society, Flag State, Port State and other statutory requirements.
• Ensure vessels maintain valid Class status, statutory certificates and technical documentation.
• Coordinate and monitor Class and statutory surveys, inspections and audits.
• Ensure findings, deficiencies and recommendations are addressed and closed within the required timeframe.

5.Technical Repairs & Shore Support

• Plan, coordinate and oversee vessel repairs and maintenance carried out by shore repairers and contractors.
• Review repair requirements, evaluate quotations and recommend suitable contractors or repairers.
• Monitor the quality, cost and progress of repair works to ensure completion within agreed specifications and timelines.
• Plan and manage vessel dry-docking, major repairs and associated surveys.
• Prepare and review dry-docking specifications, repair scopes, budgets and schedules.
• Coordinate with shipyards, Classification Societies, contractors and vessel personnel during project execution.
• Monitor project progress, quality, costs and schedules to ensure effective control.
• Prepare or review post-dry-docking reports, including completed works, expenditure and outstanding items.

7.Technical Incident Investigation

• Investigate machinery failures, hull damage and other technical or marine incidents involving the fleet.
• Conduct root cause analysis and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive measures.
• Prepare technical investigation reports and monitor the implementation of follow-up actions.

8.Crew Technical Performance

• Monitor and evaluate the technical performance and competency of shipboard engineering personnel.
• Participate in the briefing and debriefing of engineering officers and junior engineers in accordance with the Safety Management System (SMS).
• Identify competency gaps and recommend appropriate training and development.

9.Technical Budget & Cost Management

• Manage technical operating, maintenance, repair and dry-docking expenditure within approved budgets.
• Monitor expenditure and identify opportunities for cost optimisation without compromising safety, reliability or compliance.
• Provide technical and cost recommendations for major repairs and technical expenditure.

10.Technical Leadership & Continuous Improvement

• Provide technical leadership and direction to the Technical team and vessel personnel.
• Maintain effective technical procedures, standards and controls in line with company policies and the SMS.
• Drive continuous improvement in vessel reliability, safety, maintenance performance and operational efficiency.
• Collaborate with Marine Operations, HSSE, Crewing, Procurement, Finance and other relevant departments.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Management.

Job requirements

Qualification

• Possess a Class 1 Engineer Certificate of Competency (Unlimited) or equivalent.
• Candidates with a Class 2 Engineer Certificate of Competency (COC) or Diploma in Marine Engineering may be considered, subject to relevant experience and competency.

Experience

• Possess relevant sea-going experience as a Chief Engineer, Senior Marine Engineer or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 years of experience as a Technical Superintendent or in an equivalent technical management role.
• Experience in the maritime, shipping, marine services or oil and gas industry is an added advantage.
• Experience in vessel dry-docking, repairs, maintenance and technical project management is an added advantage.
• Experience in managing Class requirements, statutory surveys and vessel technical operations is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong knowledge of marine engineering, vessel maintenance, machinery and ship repair.
• Good understanding of ISM, ISPS, IMO, Classification Society, Flag State and other applicable statutory requirements.
