Job summary

VARIMAX SDN BHD seeks a Marine/Mechanical Engineer to lead ship maintenance, plan and supervise actions, and ensure timely compliance with repair and inspection regimes.

The role requires hands-on technical expertise, solid leadership, and the ability to travel on short notice to support vessel operations and regulatory surveys.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Marine or Mechanical Engineering is required.
  • Sea-going work experience as Chief Engineer/Marine Engineer with minimum Class 2.
  • At least 2 years shore-based experience.
  • Good organisational and communication skills and hands-on.
  • Independent and resourceful, able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Analytical and proactive in technical troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Able to conduct effective stand-up training for vessel crews.
  • Ability to travel on short notice as required.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and supervise the assigned ships with early action for effective supervision.
  • Familiar with maintenance recommendations from machinery/equipment makers; endorse reports and take corrective actions.
  • Expedite Classification annual and occasional surveys and monitor conditions to avoid delays.
  • Attend and oversee docking (periodical and occasional) and address defects promptly to close out reports.
  • Coordinate maintenance follow-ups and report deferred maintenance to the Technical department at COM meetings.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Manage (plan and take proper and early actions for effective supervision) the assigned ships.
  • Be familiar with machineries and equipment maker maintenance and troubleshooting recommendations.
  • Vet through and endorsed the submitted reports and take prompt corrective actions as required.
  • To expedite Classification annual and occasional surveys
  • Classification issued conditions. Monitor closely on the requirements of the stated conditions to prevent delays and downtime to the vessels.
  • To attend and oversee periodical docking and occasional docking.
  • Address defects and deficiencies as reported or sighted. Attend promptly to close out the report.
  • Plan, organize follow up to maintenance and report all deferred and outstanding maintenance to the head of the Technical department and during the monthly Company operational meetings. (COM)

1.2 Require to perform but not limited to the following,

  • Oversee correct form entries and correct forms are used for, Defects and deficiency reports, monthly PMS reports.
  • Attend promptly to appointed ship request or notification on, Store requisition, Equipment defect or deficiency
  • Verify with on board visits that Defect / Deficiency report form entries are proper (accurate) and completely closed out.
  • When repair is rectified, Complete root cause, corrective action and preventive measures in form PMS-DEF - Return form to ship.
  • Attend promptly to the submitted form PMS-DEF
  • Maintain monitoring process to ensure proper tracking from defect to repair status
  • Tech Superintendent will prepare a critical equipment and systems risk assessment for the ship.
  • Monitor closely to ensure ship critical spare inventory are in order.
  • Carry out not exceeding 12 monthly, onboard ballast tank and void spaces inspections. (PMS)
  • Carry out not exceeding 60 monthly, onboard C.O.T inspections. (PMS)
  • Make sufficiently frequent (at intervals that will achieve your purpose) ship visits to assess overall ship hull, deck and fittings and machineries condition
  • Plan in good time periodical surveys and docking schedule of the vessel.
Requirements
  • Degree in either Marine or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Possess relevant sea-going work experience as Chief Engineer/Marine Engineer with minimum class 2
  • Certification or equivalent with in experience in bunker tankers will be highly advantages.
  • At least 2 years shore based experience
  • Possess good organisational and communication skills and hands-on.
  • Independent and resourceful. Able to work under pressure to meet deadline.
  • Analytical and highly proactive in technical trouble shooting and problem solving.
  • Able to conduct effective stand-up training for vessel crews.
  • Ability to travel within short notice as required.
