Job summary

Orkim Ship Management Sdn Bhd is seeking a seasoned Chief Engineer / Senior Marine Engineer to lead the technical operations of our fleet. You will oversee PMS, vessel reliability, dry-docking planning and major repairs, while ensuring compliance with IMO, Class and Flag requirements.

You will manage budgets, supervise engineering staff, and coordinate with shipyards and internal departments to maintain safety, efficiency and seaworthiness across projects.

Qualifications

• Holds a Class 1 Engineer Certificate of Competency (Unlimited) or equivalent.
• Holds Class 2 Engineer Certificate of Competency (COC) or a Diploma in Marine Engineering.
• Minimum sea-going experience as Chief Engineer / Senior Marine Engineer.

Job description

Ensuring vessels meeting company, charterer and class standards by effective implementation of the planned maintenance system and providing technical advices, including sourcing of spare parts and keeping abreast with the latest available technology. Plan vessel schedule docking and ensuring vessels remain as classed. Monitor the inventory control of stores and spares, performance of vessels, compliance with applicable safety and pollution prevention regulations, certification status of vessels and ensure that at all times, the vessels are in a seaworthy condition. Control routine vessel inspections by Superintendents, dry docking and major repairs. Ensure that all technical reports as required by various principals. Investigating shipboard incident and any marine incident involving the fleet and recommend preventive measures.

Key responsibilities

1. Vessel Technical Operations & Monitoring

Lead and oversee the day-to-day technical operations, machinery performance and reliability of vessels under Orkim’s management.

Provide technical support and guidance to vessels and ensure timely resolution of technical issues to minimise downtime and operational disruption.

Conduct shipboard visits and technical inspections to monitor vessel condition, machinery performance and maintenance standards.

Review vessel technical reports and performance data and recommend corrective or improvement actions.

2. Planned Maintenance & Fleet Reliability

Oversee the implementation and effectiveness of the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) for vessel hull, machinery and equipment.

Monitor fleet reliability, maintenance records, breakdowns and recurring defects, and implement measures to improve vessel performance.

Ensure maintenance activities and technical documentation are properly planned, recorded and completed within the required timeframe.

3. Spare Parts & Stores Management

Oversee the planning, procurement and availability of machinery spares, technical stores and consumables within approved budgets.

Monitor fleet inventory and ensure critical spare parts are adequately maintained.

Ensure procurement is cost-effective and in accordance with Orkim’s procedures and approved budgets.

4. Class, Statutory & Regulatory Compliance

Ensure vessels comply with applicable IMO, Classification Society, Flag State, Port State and other maritime regulatory requirements.

Maintain the vessels’ Class status, statutory certificates and technical documentation within their validity periods.

Coordinate and monitor Class, statutory surveys, inspections and audits, including timely closure of findings and deficiencies.

5. Technical Repairs & Shore Support

Lead and oversee vessel repairs, maintenance and technical works carried out by shore repairers and contractors.

Review repair requirements, source and evaluate quotations, and recommend suitable contractors based on technical capability, cost and schedule.

Monitor repair quality, cost and progress to ensure works are completed safely and effectively.

Lead the planning and execution of vessel dry-docking, major repairs and associated surveys.

Prepare and review repair specifications, budgets and schedules, and coordinate with shipyards, Class, contractors and vessel teams.

Monitor dry-docking progress, costs, quality and schedule, ensuring effective control of the project.

Review and compile post-dry-docking reports, including works completed, expenditure, outstanding items and lessons learned.

7. Technical Incident Investigation

Lead investigations into machinery failures, hull damage and other technical or marine incidents involving the fleet.

Conduct root cause analysis and recommend appropriate corrective and preventive measures.

Ensure investigation reports and follow-up actions are properly documented and implemented.

8. Crew Technical Performance

Monitor and evaluate the technical performance and competency of shipboard engineering personnel.

Participate in the briefing and debriefing of engineering officers and junior engineers in accordance with the SMS.

Identify technical competency gaps and recommend appropriate training and development.

9. Technical Budget & Cost Management

Prepare and manage technical operating, maintenance, repair and dry-docking budgets.

Monitor expenditure against approved budgets and identify opportunities for cost optimisation without compromising safety, reliability or compliance.

Provide technical and cost recommendations to Management for major repairs and expenditure.

10. Technical Leadership & Continuous Improvement

Provide technical leadership and direction to the Technical Department and ensure effective management of the fleet.

Establish and maintain technical standards, procedures and controls in line with Orkim’s policies and SMS requirements.

Drive continuous improvement in vessel reliability, safety, operational efficiency and maintenance performance.

Collaborate with Marine Operations, HSSE, Crewing, Procurement, Finance and other relevant departments to ensure effective vessel management.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Management.

About you

1. Qualification

Holds a Class 1 Engineer Certificate of Competency (Unlimited) or equivalent.

Class 2 Engineer Certificate of Competency (COC) or Diploma in Marine Engineering will be considered, subject to relevant experience and competency.

2. Experience

Minimum relevant sea-going experience as Chief Engineer / Senior Marine Engineer, preferably with Class 1 or Class 2 certification.

Experience in the maritime, shipping, marine services or oil & gas industry is an added advantage.

Proven experience in dry-docking, vessel repairs, maintenance and technical project management is an added advantage.

Experience managing vessel technical operations, Class requirements, statutory surveys and shipboard engineering matters.
