About the role
We are seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Sandakan, Sabah on a contract basis. This is a critical role within our Civil and Structural Engineering division, where you will be responsible for conducting geotechnical investigations, analysis, and design for various construction projects. As a Geotechnical Engineer, you will play a vital role in ensuring the safety, stability, and durability of our projects by providing expert guidance on soil mechanics, foundation design, and ground conditions assessment. This position offers the opportunity to work on diverse and challenging projects in a dynamic construction environment.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive geotechnical site investigations and soil assessments to determine ground conditions and engineering properties
- Perform geotechnical analysis and design calculations for foundations, slopes, embankments, and retaining structures
- Prepare detailed geotechnical reports and recommendations for foundation design and ground improvement methods
- Supervise and coordinate geotechnical testing, including sampling, laboratory analysis, and in-situ testing programmes
- Provide technical guidance to project teams on foundation installation, excavation, and ground support systems
- Conduct site inspections and monitoring to assess geotechnical conditions during construction phases
- Collaborate with structural engineers, architects, and contractors to integrate geotechnical findings into project designs
- Identify and mitigate geotechnical risks and propose appropriate mitigation strategies
- Maintain compliance with relevant geotechnical standards, codes, and regulations applicable in Malaysia
- Prepare technical documentation, drawings, and specifications related to geotechnical works
What we're looking for
- A degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognised institution
- Professional qualification as a Chartered Engineer (PE, CEng, or equivalent) is highly desirable
- Minimum 5 years of post-graduation experience in geotechnical engineering practice
- Comprehensive knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, and slope stability analysis
- Proficiency with geotechnical analysis and design software (such as PLAXIS, GeoStudio, or similar)
- Strong understanding of geotechnical investigation methodologies and laboratory testing procedures
- Experience in foundation design for various structure types (buildings, bridges, retaining structures)
- Familiarity with Malaysian Building Codes and geotechnical standards
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and technical judgment in assessing complex ground conditions
- Strong communication skills and ability to prepare clear technical reports and recommendations
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software
- Ability to work effectively in collaborative team environments and liaison with multiple stakeholders
- Experience working on projects in tropical or challenging geotechnical environments is advantageous
