Job summary

Canonical seeks a General Counsel to lead its global Legal and Compliance function. Remote in EMEA time zones with a focus on governance, licensing and risk for a fast-growing tech company.

The role reports to the COO, builds a distributed team across regions, and partners with product, engineering, security and the Board. Requires a law degree, active practising licence, and senior in-house experience in tech or software.

Qualifications

• Requires law degree and active licence to practise in an EMEA or Americas jurisdiction.
• Substantial senior in-house experience in a global technology or software business.
• Experience leading a distributed legal team across regions and time zones.
• Proven track record in setting high performance standards and team development.
• Experience with corporate governance, disclosure controls and board support.

Responsibilities

• Lead Canonical's global Legal and Compliance function across EMEA and the Americas.
• Develop and manage a management layer across regions; governance, contracts and controls for a public company.
• Advise CEO, COO, CFO and the Board; support in board and committee meetings.
• Own commercial contracting framework and standard templates; escalation process.
• Lead IP and open source licensing strategy for Ubuntu and products.
• Oversee global compliance programme: data protection, export controls, anti-corruption, AI regulation.
• Manage litigation, disputes and regulatory engagement with external counsel.
