Job Description
A Staff Specialist - General Surgery provides specialized surgical assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for patients with general surgical conditions. The involves evaluating patients, planning and performing appropriate surgical procedures, managing perioperative care, responding to surgical emergencies, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, supervising clinical staff, and maintaining high standards of patient safety and surgical care.
- Evaluate patients with general surgical conditions through history and clinical examination.
- Establish appropriate diagnoses using clinical findings and diagnostic investigations.
- Develop individualized surgical treatment and management plans.
- Perform general surgical procedures appropriate to qualifications and clinical expertise.
- Provide pre-operative assessment and optimize patients before surgery.
- Obtain appropriate informed consent and explain procedures, risks, and expected outcomes.
- Manage post-operative patients and monitor recovery.
- Identify and manage post-operative complications promptly.
- Provide appropriate treatment for surgical emergencies.
- Participate in emergency surgical assessments and interventions.
- Interpret relevant laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic findings.
- Coordinate patient care with anaesthesia, radiology, pathology, critical care, and other specialties.
- Conduct ward rounds and review patients clinical progress.
- Maintain accurate clinical notes, operative records, and discharge documentation.
- Communicate treatment plans and clinical findings effectively with patients and families.
- Supervise and guide residents, junior doctors, and other clinical staff where applicable.
- Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, clinical audits, and quality improvement activities.
- Support teaching, training, research, and continuing medical education.
- Follow infection prevention, surgical safety, ethical, and hospital protocols.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professional standards of clinical practice.
