Job Description

The Staff Nurse – OT provides nursing support during surgical procedures and assists in maintaining a safe, sterile, and organized operating theatre environment. The includes preparing the operating room, checking surgical instruments and equipment, assisting the surgical team, monitoring patient safety, maintaining sterile technique, and completing accurate documentation before, during, and after surgery.

• Prepare the operating theatre before scheduled surgical procedures.
• Check the availability and functionality of surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
• Assist in preparing patients for surgery according to hospital protocols.
• Verify patient identity, surgical site, procedure details, and relevant documentation.
• Follow established surgical safety checklists and preoperative verification procedures.
• Maintain aseptic technique and sterile conditions throughout surgical procedures.
• Assist the surgical team with instrument preparation and handling.
• Support the circulating or scrub nurse duties according to assigned responsibilities and competency.
• Ensure proper preparation and arrangement of sterile surgical trays.
• Monitor the availability of sutures, dressings, implants, and other surgical consumables.
• Assist with safe patient positioning and ensure appropriate pressure-point protection.
• Coordinate with anaesthesia staff and the surgical team during patient preparation and procedures.
• Participate in surgical instrument, needle, and swab counts according to hospital policy.
• Monitor and report any breach of sterile technique or patient safety concern.
• Ensure specimens are correctly labelled and transferred to the appropriate department.
• Assist with patient transfer to the recovery area after surgery.
• Complete perioperative nursing records and other required documentation accurately.
• Ensure proper cleaning, disinfection, and turnover of the operating theatre between procedures.
• Follow biomedical waste segregation and infection control protocols.
• Report equipment malfunction, supply shortages, and incidents to the OT In-charge.
