Job summary

LRQA seeks a Welding Engineering Specialist to provide technical review support for EU ISO schemes and certification decisions. You will evaluate welding related documentation and ensure compliance with ISO 3834 and related standards.

This role requires strong technical judgment and experience in welding procedures, materials, and NDE practices. The ideal candidate will have an engineering degree, 4–6 years in relevant fields, and familiarity with certification processes.

Qualifications

  • Engineering degree (mechanical preferred) with 4–6 years in pressure equipment, manufacturing, inspection or certification.
  • Understanding of ISO 3834/CPR/PED and conformity modules.
  • Practical welding experience; IWE qualification advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical and contract reviews for assigned jobs in line with procedures and KPIs.
  • Manage and prioritise daily technical review workload for timely delivery.
  • Review and verify technical documentation supporting certification decisions.
  • Record review outcomes and assessors' feedback for accuracy.
  • Escalate issues and coordinate with internal teams and clients as needed.

Role
  • To provide technical review support for EU services specifically ISO 3834/CPR/PED schemes against defined procedures with some discretion over priorities of workload. Undertakes a range of technical review/support activities and resolves queries for internal/external clients,
  • In particular, conduct technical reviews of client organization files, after each visit requiring a certification decision; client files would contain information such as commercial agreement, assessment report, certificate
  • To produce clear, accurate, and auditable reports of technical review and support activities undertaken.
  • Act as a Welding Subject Matter Expert, possessing significant welding engineering and industry expereince supporting:
  • Compliance with scheme and code requirements
  • Review of welding-related documentation (WPS, PQR, WPQ, materials, NDT, etc.)
  • Technical review and independent decision‑making in certification processes
Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform technical and contract reviews for assigned jobs in line with defined procedures and KPIs.
  • Manage and prioritise daily technical review workload to ensure timely delivery.
  • Review and verify technical documentation, supporting certification decisions.
  • Record review outcomes, including checklists, assessor feedback, and required actions.
  • Resolve technical queries and coordinate with internal teams and external clients as needed.
  • Collaborate with technical reviewers and decision‑makers to ensure consistent interpretations.
  • Ensure compliance with internal procedures, scheme requirements, and accreditation expectations.
  • Escalate technical issues, risks, or delays appropriately to relevant stakeholders.
  • Support maintenance and consistent application of the EN ISO 3834 welding certification scheme, including review of welding‑related documentation, verification of special process controls, and ensuring alignment with accreditation, competence, and scheme requirements.
  • Maintain technical competence and CPD, including records and professional registrations.
  • Support knowledge sharing, coaching, and training within the team and to clients where required.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Contribute to process improvements and ad hoc technical activities, as required.
Technical Requirements
  • Degree in Engineering (preferable Mechanical) in a relevant subject with minimum 4-6 years’ experience in in pressure equipment, manufacturing, inspection, or certification.
  • Preferred with understanding of ISO 3834/CPR/ PED 2014/68/EU and the conformity Modules

Practical welding experience is preferred. Possession of an International Welding Engineer (IWE) qualification would be advantageous.

  • Understanding of EN ISO 3834 welding quality requirements and scheme expectations
  • Preferred with understanding of
  • Engineering documentation (drawings, calculations, specifications)
  • Materials/ Welding/ NDE practices and experience in related fields.
  • Ability to review:
  • WPS, PQR, WPQ
  • Welding procedures and qualifications
  • Welding coordination requirements (EN ISO 14731)
  • Preferred with understanding of Various International Codes and Standards like ASME/ EN Codes.
  • Substantial experience of management systems/scheme requirements and their application
  • Substantial experience in third party auditing/assessment including system level auditing and process level auditing
  • Substantial industry experience in specialist sector, preferably within a management systems environment
  • Understanding/appreciation of relevant legal/regulatory framework
  • Understanding of ISO 9001 / 17020 / 17065 / 17025 / 17021/17024 Schemes is preferable
  • Knowledge of client’s business sector - Knowledge of the terminology, practices and processes common to a client’s business sector sufficient to understand an audit report in the context of the management system standard or other normative document.
