The Senior Engineer – QA/QC (Mechanical) is responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring quality assurance and quality control activities for mechanical engineering, fabrication, installation, testing, and commissioning works. The role ensures that all mechanical deliverables comply with approved drawings, project specifications, applicable codes and standards, regulatory requirements, and the organization’s quality management system.


The position requires close coordination with engineering, construction, procurement, subcontractors, consultants, and client representatives to prevent defects, resolve quality issues, maintain complete inspection records, and support the timely delivery of reliable mechanical systems.


Quality Assurance and Quality Control


  • Develop, implement, and maintain project-specific mechanical QA/QC procedures, inspection and test plans, checklists, and quality documentation.

  • Review approved-for-construction drawings, technical specifications, method statements, material submittals, and inspection requirements before work begins.

  • Ensure mechanical activities are executed in accordance with approved procedures, project quality plans, contractual requirements, and applicable international standards.

  • Establish inspection points, hold points, witness points, and review points in coordination with the client, consultant, and project team.

  • Monitor the quality of mechanical fabrication, installation, assembly, alignment, piping, equipment erection, pressure testing, and commissioning activities.

  • Verify that workmanship, materials, equipment, and installation practices meet the specified quality requirements.

  • Identify potential quality risks at an early stage and recommend preventive and corrective actions.


Inspection and Testing


  • Coordinate and conduct inspections of incoming materials, equipment, fabricated components, piping systems, mechanical packages, and installed systems.

  • Verify material certificates, mill test certificates, equipment documentation, calibration certificates, and compliance records.

  • Witness and document inspections and tests, including dimensional checks, visual inspections, pressure tests, leak tests, alignment checks, functional tests, and performance tests, as applicable.

  • Ensure inspection and testing equipment is properly calibrated, suitable for use, and supported by valid calibration records.

  • Review test packs, inspection dossiers, commissioning records, and mechanical completion documentation.

  • Monitor non-destructive testing activities where applicable and verify that results meet the required acceptance criteria.

  • Ensure punch-list items are accurately recorded, tracked, and closed within the agreed timeframe.


Documentation and Reporting


  • Prepare and maintain inspection requests, inspection reports, test records, material receiving inspection reports, non-conformance reports, corrective action reports, and quality registers.

  • Review subcontractor and supplier quality documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.

  • Maintain organized quality records and ensure traceability of materials, inspections, tests, approvals, and corrective actions.

  • Prepare periodic QA/QC status reports, quality dashboards, inspection summaries, and progress updates for project management and stakeholders.

  • Support the preparation and compilation of final quality dossiers, handover documents, operation and maintenance records, and as-built documentation.


Non-Conformance and Continuous Improvement


  • Raise, investigate, and manage non-conformance reports related to mechanical works, materials, processes, or documentation.

  • Coordinate root-cause analysis and verify the implementation and effectiveness of corrective and preventive actions.

  • Escalate recurring or critical quality issues to the QA/QC Manager and project leadership.

  • Participate in internal audits, external audits, surveillance inspections, and management reviews.

  • Recommend improvements to work methods, inspection processes, documentation systems, and quality performance.

  • Promote a proactive quality culture focused on defect prevention, first-time-right execution, and continual improvement.


Coordination and Team Leadership


  • Coordinate with construction, engineering, procurement, commissioning, HSE, suppliers, subcontractors, consultants, and client representatives on quality-related matters.

  • Provide technical guidance and day-to-day direction to QA/QC inspectors and junior engineers.

  • Conduct quality briefings, toolbox talks, pre-inspection meetings, and technical coordination meetings when required.

  • Review subcontractor quality plans, inspection and test plans, method statements, and personnel competency records.

  • Support project teams in resolving technical and quality-related issues without compromising safety, compliance, or system performance.


Key Requirements

Education and Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • Relevant professional experience in mechanical QA/QC, construction, fabrication, installation, testing, or commissioning projects.

  • Experience in a senior QA/QC engineering role with responsibility for managing inspections, documentation, non-conformances, and quality compliance.

  • Experience working with contractors, subcontractors, consultants, suppliers, and client inspection teams.

  • Experience in reviewing mechanical drawings, specifications, method statements, inspection and test plans, and quality records.


Technical Knowledge


  • Strong knowledge of mechanical construction and installation activities, including equipment installation, piping, pumps, compressors, pressure vessels, tanks, HVAC systems, rotating equipment, static equipment, and associated mechanical systems, as applicable.

  • Working knowledge of relevant international codes, standards, and project specifications, such as ASME, API, ASTM, AWS, ISO, and applicable local regulations.

  • Knowledge of welding quality requirements, welding procedure specifications, welder qualifications, inspection methods, material traceability, and non-destructive testing principles.

  • Understanding of pressure testing, dimensional inspection, equipment alignment, coating and painting inspection, preservation, mechanical completion, and commissioning requirements.

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, isometric drawings, equipment data sheets, technical specifications, method statements, and vendor documents.

  • Proficiency in preparing and reviewing inspection documentation, quality registers, test packs, and handover dossiers.


Certifications and Professional Skills


  • Certification in quality management, inspection, or relevant mechanical inspection disciplines is preferred.

  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 quality management system requirements.

  • Relevant inspection certifications such as CSWIP, AWS, API, NDT, or equivalent credentials may be advantageous, depending on project requirements.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, planning, coordination, and reporting skills.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with electronic document management and quality management systems.

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet project deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • High attention to detail, integrity, accountability, and commitment to quality.
