Job Summary
We are looking for a Purchase Engineer responsible for managing procurement activities for automation, electrical, instrumentation, mechanical and project-related materials. The candidate will be responsible for vendor development, sourcing, negotiation, purchase order management, material follow-up and ensuring timely availability of materials as per project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle end-to-end procurement activities for project and operational requirements.
- Understand purchase requisitions, BOMs, technical specifications and project material requirements.
- Source materials from approved and new vendors as per quality, cost and delivery requirements.
- Identify and develop new vendors for electrical, instrumentation, automation, mechanical and other engineering items.
- Obtain and compare quotations from multiple suppliers.
- Negotiate prices, payment terms, delivery schedules and other commercial conditions.
- Prepare and release Purchase Orders after obtaining the required approvals.
- Coordinate with Engineering, Projects, Stores, Accounts and other departments regarding procurement requirements.
- Follow up with vendors for timely delivery of materials.
- Monitor purchase orders and maintain proper records of orders, quotations and vendor communications.
- Coordinate with vendors for material shortages, quality issues, delays and replacement of defective materials.
- Ensure procurement is completed within approved budgets and project timelines.
- Evaluate vendor performance based on quality, price, delivery and service.
- Maintain an updated vendor database and develop long-term vendor relationships.
- Assist in cost reduction and value-engineering initiatives.
- Coordinate with Stores for material receipt and resolve discrepancies, if any.
- Ensure all purchase documentation is maintained as per company procedures.
- Support urgent procurement requirements for project sites whenever required.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree / Diploma in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation or related Engineering discipline.
- 2–5 years of experience in purchase/procurement, preferably in an automation, engineering, EPC or manufacturing company.
- Good knowledge of electrical, instrumentation, automation and engineering materials.
- Experience in vendor identification, quotation comparison and commercial negotiation.
- Good understanding of Purchase Orders, RFQs, delivery schedules and procurement processes.
- Working knowledge of ERP systems and MS Excel.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong negotiation and vendor management skills.
- Ability to coordinate with multiple departments and work within project deadlines.
- Good analytical, follow-up and problem-solving abilities.
Preferred Knowledge
Candidates having experience in procurement of the following will be preferred:
- PLC, HMI, SCADA and automation components
- Control panels and electrical components
