Job summary

Akas Medical Equipment is seeking a Product Design Engineer (Mechanical) in Chennai to join our product development team. You will contribute to concept development, mechanism design, 3D modelling, and design for production, ensuring robust, manufacturable solutions.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with Creo or SolidWorks, GD&T proficiency, and a passion for turning ideas into real medical devices.

Qualifications

• B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering / Mechatronics / Product Design.
• Minimum 2+ years of experience in Product Design / Product Development.
• Strong knowledge of mechanisms, engineering materials and manufacturing processes.
• Good understanding of mechanical engineering principles and design practices.
• Hands‑on experience with Creo or SolidWorks.
• Good knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis.
• Experience in taking a product from concept through prototype and production.
• Strong problem‑solving, analytical and design-thinking skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop innovative mechanical product concepts from requirements to production.
• Design and develop mechanisms, moving assemblies, hinges, latches, linkages, gears, springs, cams, clamps and sliding systems.
• Perform engineering calculations related to motion, force, torque, stress, strain, pressure, friction and material behaviour.
• Develop robust and reliable designs considering performance, cost, manufacturability and serviceability.
• Work closely with cross-functional teams throughout the product development cycle.
• Create detailed 3D models, assemblies and engineering drawings using Creo or SolidWorks.
• Apply GD&T, dimensional tolerances and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Perform DFM/DFA reviews to ensure designs are suitable for manufacturing and assembly.
• Develop detailed part and assembly drawings with appropriate specifications.
• Conduct design reviews and implement engineering improvements.

About the Role

We are looking for a creative and technically strong Product Design Engineer to join our product development team. The ideal candidate will have hands‑on experience in mechanical product design, mechanisms, 3D modelling, engineering drawings, GD&T, materials, manufacturing processes, and design for production.

You will be involved in the complete product development lifecycle from concept development and mechanism design to prototyping, testing, tooling and production.

Key Responsibilities

Product Design & Development

• Develop innovative mechanical product concepts from requirements to production.
• Design and develop mechanisms, moving assemblies, hinges, latches, linkages, gears, springs, cams, clamps and sliding systems.

3D Modelling, Detailing & Engineering

• Create detailed 3D models, assemblies and engineering drawings using Creo or SolidWorks.
• Apply GD&T, dimensional tolerances and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Perform DFM/DFA reviews to ensure designs are suitable for manufacturing and assembly.
• Develop detailed part and assembly drawings with appropriate specifications.
• Conduct design reviews and implement engineering improvements.

Materials & Manufacturing

• Select appropriate materials based on product requirements, performance and manufacturing feasibility.
• Strong understanding of engineering plastics such as ABS, PC, PA (Nylon), POM, PC+ABS, and other relevant materials.
• Knowledge of injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, machining and other manufacturing processes.
• Collaborate with manufacturing teams to resolve design and production issues.

Tooling, Prototyping & Production

• Coordinate with tooling teams for mould design and tooling development.
• Support prototype development, trials and design validation.
• Participate in testing, validation and production ramp-up activities.
• Identify and resolve design-related issues during prototype and production stages.
• Support continuous improvement and design-for-reliability initiatives.
