Responsibilities

  • P&L responsibility: manage the financial health, cash flow, and profitability of the civil projects.
  • Budgeting & cost control: establish budgets, monitor variations (DO/COS/Extra Items), and implement cost-mitigation strategies.
  • Lifecycle Oversight: direct civil engineering projects from initial design and pre-construction through to final handover.
  • Resource Optimization: allocate heavy machinery, materials, and labour across multiple sites.
  • Timeline Management: conduct progress review meetings and review master schedules (e.g., Primavera, MSP) and document delays to the client.
  • Regulatory Compliance: ensure operations conform to zoning, environmental laws, building codes, and regulations.
  • HSE Leadership: enforce zero-harm Health, Safety, and Environment protocols on site.
  • Quality Assurance: implement quality control frameworks to guarantee structural integrity and minimize rework.
  • Client Relations: serve as primary contact for project owners/clients and attend reviews.
  • Vendor & Subcontractor Management: negotiate terms and manage performance with third-party suppliers and contractors.
  • Team Mentorship: lead and develop Senior Project Managers, Site Engineers, and technical teams.

JOB DESCRIPTION GENERAL MANAGER (Projects)

A General Manager (GM) for Civil Projects is a high-level executive responsible for overseeing the lifecycle of large-scale infrastructure, commercial, or residential construction projects. This role bridges the gap between executive corporate strategy and on-site technical execution. He will report to the Senior Vice President (Projects).

Role Overview

The General Manager ensures that multiple civil projects are completed on time, within budget, and up to safety and quality specifications. They manage profit and loss (P&L), direct senior project managers, and handle high-stakes relationships with clients, government regulators, and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic & Financial Management
  • P&L Responsibility: Manage the complete financial health, cash flow, and profitability of the civil projects.
  • Budgeting & Cost Control: Establish overarching project budgets, monitor variations (DO/COS/Extra Items), and implement cost-mitigation strategies.
2. Project Execution & Logistics
  • Lifecycle Oversight: Direct civil engineering projects from initial engineering design and pre-construction through to final handover.
  • Resource Optimization: Allocate heavy machinery, materials, and labour force efficiently across multiple active project sites.
  • Timeline Management: Conduct Progress Review meetings, review project master schedules (e.g., Primavera, MSP) and troubleshoot bottlenecking delays immediately. Also document the delays and correspond with the client efficiently.
3. Compliance, Quality & Safety
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all operations conform to local zoning, environmental laws, building codes, and structural regulations.
  • HSE Leadership: Enforce zero-harm Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) protocols on site.
  • Quality Assurance: Implement strict quality control frameworks to guarantee structural integrity and minimize rework.
4. Stakeholder & Team Leadership
  • Client Relations: Act as the primary point of contact for project owners/clients. Attend Reviews with Clients.
  • Vendor & Subcontractor Management: Negotiate terms and manage performance agreements with third-party suppliers and contractors.
  • Team Mentorship: Efficiently lead and develop Senior Project Managers, Site Engineers, and technical teams.
