Job description

Key Responsibilities
1. Team Handling & Department Management
  • Lead and supervise the Biomedical Engineering team responsible for diagnostic laboratory equipment.
  • Allocate daily work, preventive maintenance activities, breakdown calls, and service priorities to team members.
  • Monitor team performance, productivity, attendance, and response time.
  • Conduct regular team meetings, technical reviews, and performance assessments.
  • Identify training requirements and provide/arrange technical training for engineers and technicians.
  • Ensure adequate manpower coverage for critical laboratory operations and emergency breakdowns.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, preventive maintenance, and timely service.
2. Preventive Maintenance
  • Develop, implement, and monitor preventive maintenance (PM) schedules for all diagnostic and laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure timely completion of daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, and annual maintenance activities as applicable.
  • Monitor PM compliance and ensure maintenance records are complete and properly documented.
  • Identify recurring equipment failures and implement corrective/preventive actions.
  • Coordinate calibration, validation, performance verification, and safety checks of equipment.
  • Ensure critical equipment is maintained according to manufacturer recommendations and departmental SOPs.
3. Breakdown & Corrective Maintenance
  • Supervise and coordinate timely resolution of equipment breakdowns.
  • Establish response and resolution timelines based on equipment criticality.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and support the team in identifying root causes.
  • Escalate critical breakdowns to OEM/authorized service providers whenever required.
  • Analyze breakdown trends and implement measures to minimize downtime and repeat failures.
  • Maintain equipment downtime records and prepare periodic performance reports.
4. Diagnostic Laboratory Equipment Management
  • Ensure availability and functionality of critical laboratory equipment such as:
    • Biochemistry analyzers
    • Hematology analyzers
    • Immunoassay analyzers
    • Microbiology equipment
    • Molecular diagnostic/PCR systems
    • Centrifuges
    • Incubators
    • Refrigerators/freezers
    • Autoclaves
    • Water purification systems
    • UPS and other equipment supporting laboratory operations
  • Coordinate installation, commissioning, acceptance testing, relocation, and decommissioning of equipment.
  • Ensure equipment is available for clinical use with minimum operational downtime.
5. AMC / CMC & Vendor Management
  • Coordinate AMC/CMC activities and ensure service visits are completed as per contractual terms.
  • Monitor vendor performance, service response time, spare-parts availability, and equipment uptime.
  • Verify service reports, quotations, invoices, and replacement of spare parts.
  • Coordinate with OEMs and authorized service providers for critical equipment.
  • Support contract renewal, technical evaluation, and vendor performance assessment.
  • Ensure warranty and service-contract benefits are utilized effectively.
6. Calibration & Quality Compliance
  • Maintain an updated asset register containing equipment details, serial numbers, installation dates, warranty/AMC/CMC status, and maintenance history.
  • Ensure timely calibration and certification of applicable equipment.
  • Maintain documentation required for NABL, ISO, and other applicable quality/accreditation requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits and ensure timely closure of observations.
  • Ensure equipment-related SOPs, checklists, service reports, calibration certificates, and maintenance records are properly maintained.
7. Equipment Lifecycle & Asset Management
  • Assess equipment condition, age, utilization, repair history, and replacement requirements.
  • Support preparation of annual CAPEX/OPEX proposals for equipment procurement and replacement.
  • Participate in technical evaluation of new equipment and vendor demonstrations.
  • Assist in installation qualification, operational qualification, performance verification, and user acceptance, as applicable.
  • Recommend replacement of obsolete, unreliable, or high-maintenance equipment.
8. Safety & Risk Management
  • Ensure biomedical equipment is operated and maintained safely.
  • Identify equipment-related risks and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Ensure electrical safety, grounding, UPS/power-backup requirements, and environmental conditions are monitored for critical equipment.
  • Support incident investigation related to equipment failure and patient/user safety.
  • Ensure compliance with infection-control and laboratory safety requirements where applicable.
9. MIS & Performance Monitoring
  • Prepare periodic reports on:
    • Preventive maintenance compliance
    • Breakdown frequency
    • Equipment uptime/downtime
    • Mean time to repair (MTTR)
    • Mean time between failures (MTBF)
    • AMC/CMC status
    • Calibration status
    • Critical equipment availability
    • Spare-parts consumption
    • Vendor performance
  • Present equipment performance and maintenance status to management.
  • Identify trends and implement continuous-improvement initiatives.
