Role & responsibilities
1. CNC Machine Operation
- Operate CNC roll-turning and machining equipment safely and efficiently as per approved operating procedures.
- Carry out roll turning, dressing, grooving, machining and finishing operations as per approved roll pass drawings and machining instructions.
- Select appropriate CNC programs, tools, inserts and machining parameters according to roll material and profile requirements.
2. Roll Pass Machining
- Perform accurate machining of roll passes, grooves, collars, radii and other required profiles.
- Ensure correct pass dimensions, groove depth, roll diameter and profile geometry as per drawing/pass schedule.
- Maintain required surface finish and dimensional accuracy.
3. Roll Inspection
- Inspect rolls before and after CNC machining for:
Roll diameter
Groove dimensions
Pass profile
Collar dimensions
Radius
Surface condition
Cracks/chipping and other abnormalities
- Use vernier caliper, micrometer, profile gauges and other measuring instruments correctly.
4. Roll Dressing & Reconditioning
- Carry out scheduled roll dressing/reconditioning to restore required pass geometry.
- Ensure proper removal of worn, damaged or cracked portions before machining.
- Follow defined roll-dressing frequency and tonnage-based maintenance requirements.
5. CNC Program & Parameter Control
- Use approved CNC programs and ensure correct program selection for each roll/pass.
- Verify tool offsets, work offsets, zero setting and machine parameters before starting machining.
- Report any abnormality in CNC program, machine movement or machining parameters to the supervisor.
6. Dimensional Accuracy & Quality
- Ensure machining is carried out within specified dimensional tolerances.
- Verify critical pass dimensions at appropriate stages of machining.
- Prevent over-machining and maintain maximum possible roll/pass life.
- Ensure proper identification and traceability of each roll after machining.
7. Machine Maintenance
- Carry out routine inspection of CNC machine, lubrication system, hydraulic system, coolant system, chuck/fixtures and other accessories.
- Check machine condition before starting the shift.
- Immediately report abnormal vibration, noise, temperature, leakage, spindle/tool issues or CNC alarms.
- Maintain basic operator-level preventive maintenance activities.
8. Tool & Consumable Management
- Ensure proper selection and handling of cutting tools, inserts, holders and measuring instruments.
- Monitor tool wear and replace tools at appropriate intervals.
- Maintain minimum required stock of critical CNC tools and consumables.
9. Safety
- Follow all SPM safety procedures, PPE, LOTO and machine guarding requirements.
- Ensure proper clamping and securing of rolls before machining.
- Never enter the machining zone while the machine is running.
- Maintain safe handling practices for heavy rolls using EOT crane/Hydra/Farana as applicable.
- Report unsafe conditions, near misses and equipment abnormalities immediately.
10. Roll Identification & Traceability
- Verify roll identification, grade, serial number and machining requirement before starting work.
- Maintain proper records of roll diameter before/after machining.
- Record machining details, pass number, tonnage, dressing quantity and final dimensions.
- Ensure proper marking and storage of completed rolls.
11. Coordination with Roll Shop & Mill
- Coordinate with Roll Shop, Guide Shop and SPM Operations for timely availability of rolls.
- Prioritize roll machining according to the rolling schedule and upcoming section changes.
- Ensure emergency roll dressing/machining requirements are attended promptly to minimize mill downtime.
12. Troubleshooting
- Identify machining abnormalities such as chatter, vibration, poor surface finish, dimensional deviation, tool breakage and incorrect profile.
- Take immediate corrective action within the defined operating procedure.
- Escalate major machine or quality issues to the CNC Supervisor/Shift In-Charge.
13. 5S & Housekeeping
- Maintain excellent housekeeping around the CNC machine and work area.
- Ensure proper collection and disposal of chips, coolant and machining waste.
- Keep tools, gauges and fixtures properly identified and stored.
- Follow 5S standards and workplace organization practices.
14. Continuous Improvement
- Participate in TPM, 5S, Kaizen and productivity-improvement initiatives.
- Suggest improvements in machining cycle time, tool life, roll utilization and pass life.
- Support reduction of CNC machining time and improvement of roll-shop productivity.
