Job summary

ESB Engineering and Major Projects is seeking a Senior Professional Mechanical Engineer to lead overhaul projects across the ESB Generation portfolio. The role focuses on planning, execution, and delivery of mechanical overhauls for gas turbines, HRSGs, boilers, and related balance-of-plant systems.

The candidate should have a strong background in power generation and project engineering, with at least five years' experience, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a hybrid,

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Lead technical delivery of plant overhauls across ESB Generation portfolio.
• Support overhaul planning and programmes from planning to safe delivery.
• Manage mechanical contracts including procurement, tendering and evaluation.
• Ensure compliance with safety, health and environmental regulations and ESB standards.
• Supervise contractors and review quality assurance at interfaces.
• Plan and supervise outage and site works for main plant mechanical equipment.

The Generation Engineering department in ESB Engineering and Major Projects (EMP) is the centre of engineering for ESB's generation businesses. The Projects & Overhauls department function within Generation Engineering is to aide ESB Generation & Trading (G&T) in the delivery of overhauls & outages across the asset portfolio, both thermal & Hydro focused.

We currently have an opportunity for Senior Mechanical Engineers within the Projects & Overhauls Team in Generation Engineering. The successful candidate will support ESB with the management of overhaul projects on existing assets for ESB G&T.

Suitable candidates will lead the technical delivery of plant overhauls across the ESB Generation portfolio. Aligned with same, candidates should have a background in construction, commissioning, maintenance, or operation of:

• Gas Turbine Technology.
• Steam Turbine Technology.
• Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) & Boiler technologies.
• High Energy Piping.
• Hydroelectric Turbine Technology.
• Power Generation Balance of Plant Technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to the following:

• Support Overhaul Planning & Programme: Aide the Station & Project Manager in the planning phase through to safe & efficient delivery of the Overhaul / Outages.
• Support the Asset Management Process: Support on technical input, liaison with Asset Specialists & reporting on assets pre/post overhaul to the aide in the Long-Term Asset Planning.
• Inspection & Test Plans: Implement Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) for mechanical aspects in collaboration with the relevant internal Competent Persons and/or Asset Management Specialists.
• Advance experience & knowledge in Generation assets: In preparation & delivery of overhauls, develop a thorough understanding of generation asset types applicable to each station, including balance of plant areas. (Plant area knowledge training for specific asset types will be provided)
• Contract Management & Procurement: Manage allocated mechanical contracts and other assigned work scopes, including procurement elements such as specification generation, tendering, evaluations & awards.
• Safety Compliance: Ensure all project works comply with statutory safety, health, and environmental regulations and ESB Technical Standards & Guidelines. Where required, carry out authorized roles under the safety rules (Safe Systems of Work), training for same & plant area knowledge development will be provided.
• Supervision & Quality Assurance: Supervise contractors' work daily, review ITP protocol sheets, and ensure work quality aligns with Project Quality Plan. Quality assurance at the work interface will be a key feature of the role.
• Audits & Reporting: Conduct regular safety, environment, and quality audits; report progress against schedule; attend project meetings.
• Outage Planning & Execution: Plan and supervise engineering site works for outages and overhauls on main plant mechanical equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

• Proven track record of significant experience in the power generation industry. A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience is required.
• The candidate will possess competence in design, construction, commissioning, maintenance or operation of mechanical systems in power generation or related process industry.
• Strong interpersonal skills, ability to manage stakeholders, to work and share knowledge within a team structure and to make quality decisions and judgements.
• The candidate will possess project engineering and project management skills, strong time management and prioritisation skills.
• Strong communication, report writing skills and proficient computer skills (including MS Office).
• Well versed with health, safety, construction and environment standards and procedures, including risk assessment skills.
• Full clean driving license (B car licence)

Qualifications

• Primary Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Level 8 NFQ) or equivalent relevant work experience.
• Chartered Engineering status with a recognised engineering institution or demonstrable evidence of progress towards same is preferred.
• Past experience working on an electricity generating power plant.

Location

ESB Engineering and Major Projects office, The Sidings, Dublin or EMP Eastgate Cork. Due to the nature of the work most time will be spent on site for the preparation and delivery of overhaul works. Flexibility is important in this role as the role will include travel both nationally and internationally.
