Electricity Supply Board (ESB) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for the Projects & Overhauls Team within Generation Engineering. The role focuses on leading the technical delivery of plant overhauls across ESB’s generation portfolio, with exposure to gas turbines, HRSGs, high-energy piping and hydroelectric tech.

Travel nationally and internationally may be required. Based at ESB Engineering and Major Projects, you will collaborate with project managers, contractors and asset management

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in power generation.
  • Experience in design, construction, commissioning, maintenance or operation of mechanical systems.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Full clean driving license (B).
  • Progress toward Chartered Engineer status is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Support overhaul planning and programme delivery.
  • Develop knowledge of generation assets and balance of plant areas.
  • Delivery of mid-scale overhaul projects in line with programme.
  • Contract management and procurement including specification, tendering, evaluations and awards.
  • Ensure safety, health and environmental compliance and ESB standards.
  • Implement ITPs for mechanical aspects with internal stakeholders.
  • Supervise contractors and ensure QA at interfaces.
  • Conduct safety, environment, and quality audits and report progress.

The Generation Engineering department in ESB Engineering and Major Projects (EMP) is the centre of engineering for ESB’s generation businesses . The Projects & Overhauls department function within Generation Engineering is to aide ESB Generation & Trading (G&T) in the delivery of overhauls & outages across the asset portfolio, both thermal & Hydro focused.

We currently have an opportunity for Mechanical Engineers within the Projects & Overhauls Team in Generation Engineering.

Suitable candidates will lead the technical delivery of plant overhauls across the ESB Generation portfolio. Aligned with same, candidates should have background experience in either of the following mechanical plant areas:

  • Gas Turbine Technology.
  • Steam Turbine Technology.
  • Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) & Boiler technologies.
  • High Energy Piping.
  • Hydroelectric Turbine Technology.
  • Power Generation Balance of Plant Technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Support Overhaul Planning & Programme: Aide the Station & Project Manager in the planning phase through to safe & efficient delivery of the Overhaul / Outages.
  • Develop experience & knowledge in Generation assets: In preparation & delivery of overhauls, gain an understanding of generation asset types applicable to each station, including balance of plant areas. (Plant area knowledge training for specific asset types will be provided)
  • Delivery of mid-scale Overhaul Projects: Assist the Project Manager & overhaul programme through delivery of main & balance of plant projects.
  • Contract Management & Procurement: Manage allocated mechanical contracts and other assigned work scopes, including procurement elements such as specification generation, tendering, evaluations & awards.
  • Safety Compliance : Ensure all project works comply with statutory safety, health, and environmental regulations and ESB Technical Standards & Guidelines. Where required, carry out authorized roles under the safety rules (Safe Systems of Work), training for same & plant area knowledge development will be provided.
  • Inspection & Test Plans: Implement Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs) for mechanical aspects in collaboration with the relevant internal Competent Persons and/or Asset Management Specialists.
  • Supervision & Quality Assurance: Supervise contractors' work daily, review ITP protocol sheets, and ensure work quality aligns with Project Quality Plan. Quality assurance at the work interface will be a key feature of the role.
  • Audits & Reporting: Conduct regular safety, environment, and quality audits; report progress against schedule; attend project meetings.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Proven track record of significant experience in the power generation industry. A minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience is required.
  • The candidate will possess experience in design, construction, commissioning, maintenance or operation of mechanical systems in power generation or related process industry.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to manage stakeholders, to work and share knowledge within a team structure and to make quality decisions and judgements.
  • The candidate will possess project engineering and project management skills, strong time management and prioritisation skills.
  • Strong communication, report writing skills and proficient computer skills (including MS Office).
  • Well versed with health, safety, construction and environment standards and procedures, including risk assessment skills.
  • Full clean driving license (B car licence)

Qualifications

  • Primary Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Level 8 NFQ) or equivalent relevant work experience.
  • Evidence of progressing towards Chartered Engineering status through recognised programme.
  • Past experience working on an electricity generating power plant.

Location

ESB Engineering and Major Projects office, The Sidings, Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 2 or EMP Eastgate Cork. Due to the nature of the work most time will be spent on site for the preparation and delivery of overhaul works. Flexibility is important in this role as the role may require include travel both nationally & internationally.
