Job summary

WSP UK & Ireland is seeking a Primary Design Engineer to join the Energy team. You will deliver HV/EHV substation designs (132kV–400kV) and work within AIS & GIS environments, ensuring compliance with standards and CDM requirements.

Qualifications

• Minimum HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering.
• Experience on small to large substation projects (new, retrofit, or reinforcement).
• Proven HV and EHV substation design experience (AIS & GIS), from 132kV up to 400kV.
• Knowledge of HV/EHV plant standards and policies, including earthing and clearances.
• Exposure to substation cable design, protection and control.
• HS and CDM requirements experience, able to act as Designer/Principal Designer.
• Chartered engineer status or working towards chartered status (preferable).

Responsibilities

• Produce design drawings for Grid and Primary substations.
• Prepare electrical specifications for Electrical plant and providing associated electrical designs for the substation upgrades, from 132kV up to 400kV.
• Produce substation design feasibility reports, cost estimates, layouts, GA’s, and plant specifications (transformers, switchgear, battery systems).
• Review designs produced by suppliers and client to ensure regulatory compliance and policy alignment.
• Ensure designs delivered in accordance with contract and client specs.
• Undertake the role of CDM Designer and/or Principal Designer for developed HV and EHV projects.
• Identify and manage health and safety risks for the project team.
• Attend site meetings to support design changes during build.
