Job summary

Mitie Ireland is seeking a Fire Safety Engineer to inspect, install, test, and remediate passive fire protection systems across Dublin and other sites in Ireland. The role requires mandatory Fire and Smoke Damper qualification and travel to sites as needed.

Job Purpose

The Fire Safety Engineer is responsible for inspecting, installing, maintaining, testing, and remediating passive fire protection systems, including fire/smoke dampers, fire doors, fire stopping systems, and compartmentation barriers. Fire and Smoke Damper training and qualification is a clear mandatory requirement for this role; applicants must already hold this qualification/training to be considered. The role is critical in ensuring the integrity of fire-resistant construction, maintaining compliance with Irish Building Regulations and industry standards, and preventing the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases through buildings.

Key Responsibilities
Inspection & Assessment

Conduct detailed inspections of fire / Smoke Dampers and passive fire protection systems in commercial, residential, healthcare, educational, and public buildings.

Identify non-compliance issues, compartmentation defects, and breaches in fire-rated construction, recommending appropriate remedial actions.

Survey cable, pipework, ductwork, and mixed-service penetrations to assess compliance with tested fire stopping systems.

Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and fire stopping details to identify fire-rated assemblies and penetration sealing requirements.

Record findings using digital reporting systems, including photographic evidence and remedial recommendations.

Maintenance & Repairs

Carry out routine maintenance and repairs on fire dampers, including seals, hinges, closers, glazing, ironmongery, and signage.

Inspect, maintain, and remediate fire stopping installations to ensure ongoing compliance and effective compartmentation.

Reinstate fire compartmentation following construction activities, maintenance works, or identified defects.

Remove and replace defective or non-compliant fire stopping materials in accordance with tested and certified systems.

Installation

Install fire and smoke dampers in accordance with manufacturer specifications, certified installation methods, and Irish Building Regulations.

Install and remediate passive fire protection systems, including fire batt systems, intumescent sealants, collars, wraps, pillows, cavity barriers, and linear gap sealing systems.

Install fire stopping solutions around electrical, mechanical, and mixed-service penetrations, ensuring compliance with tested and certified system requirements.

Ensure all installations are correctly documented, certified, and achieve the required fire-resistance performance.

Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and building contractors to ensure fire stopping is correctly incorporated into project works.

Compliance & Documentation

Maintain accurate documentation, certification records, product traceability information, and photographic evidence of completed works.

Use digital compliance systems such as OneTrace to record inspections, installations, and remedial works.

Ensure all activities comply with applicable Irish fire safety legislation, building regulations, manufacturer instructions, and third-party certification requirements.

Identify and report non-compliant installations, materials, or defects affecting fire safety compliance.

Customer Service

Liaise with clients, building managers, and contractors to explain findings and provide guidance on fire/smoke damper, fire door, and compartmentation compliance.

Provide professional advice on fire safety improvements.

Stay up to date with industry best practices and new fire-stopping technologies.

About You
Qualifications & Experience
  • Relevant trade qualification (e.g., carpentry, joinery, or fire safety engineering).
  • Certification in fire door inspection and installation (e.g., BM TRADA, FDIS, or equivalent).

Mandatory requirement: Applicants must hold recognised Fire and Smoke Damper inspection, testing, maintenance, and reporting training and qualification, or an equivalent recognised certification, at the time of application.

Minimum 2 years' experience in fire damper inspection/testing, fire door inspection, maintenance, installation, or passive fire protection works.

  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Full clean driving licence (if travel is required).
Skills & Competencies
  • Strong knowledge of Irish fire safety legislation, passive fire protection principles, and compartmentation requirements.

Experience carrying out fire/smoke damper inspections and testing, fire door inspections, compartmentation surveys, fire stopping inspections, passive fire protection assessments and remediation programmes.

  • Knowledge of tested fire stopping systems and third-party certification schemes.

Competent in fire damper inspection procedures, testing requirements, defect identification, maintenance recommendations, and accurate compliance reporting.

  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, specifications, and fire stopping details.
  • Competent in digital inspection, compliance, and reporting systems.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and attention to detail.
Desirable
  • Certification in passive fire protection (e.g., ASFP Level 2 or 3, IFC, or equivalent)

Manufacturer-specific fire and smoke damper training would be advantageous in addition to the mandatory Fire and Smoke Damper qualification requirement.

Experience with fire door surveys, installation, and maintenance would be an advantage.

  • Safe Pass, Manual Handling, and Working at Height certification.
  • Experience carrying out compartmentation surveys, fire stopping inspections, remediation programmes, and the installation of tested passive fire protection systems in occupied buildings.
