Commercial Manager

Our client is an established and highly regarded provider of specialist industrial services, delivering complex projects and contracts across major industrial, engineering and infrastructure environments.
Due to continued growth, they are seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to join their team and take a key role in driving commercial performance, profitability and growth across the business.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Quantity Surveyor or commercial professional who enjoys operating in a fast-paced, technically complex environment, partnering closely with operational leadership, clients and senior stakeholders to deliver strong commercial outcomes.
You'll take end-to-end commercial responsibility across a portfolio of projects and contracts, providing the commercial leadership, insight and challenge needed to ensure projects are delivered successfully and profitably.
Responsibilities:
Commercial Leadership
- Take overall commercial ownership of multiple industrial services projects and contracts.
- Lead the commercial strategy from tender through to final account and close-out.
- Provide commercial challenge and insight to operational teams, ensuring projects remain focused on margin and performance.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability, cash flow and commercial outcomes.
- Support the wider business growth strategy through effective commercial planning and decision-making.
Contract & Client Management
- Lead contract administration across a range of complex commercial arrangements.
- Manage variations, valuations, claims, extensions of time, final accounts and commercial negotiations.
- Interpret and apply construction and engineering contracts, protecting the company's commercial position.
- Build strong, commercially credible relationships with clients and key stakeholders.
- Lead negotiations with clients, subcontractors and suppliers where required.
Financial & Performance Management
- Take ownership of project budgets, forecasts, cost control and financial reporting.
- Monitor project performance against budget, identifying trends and corrective actions early.
- Provide accurate forecasting and commercial reporting to senior management.
- Drive improved margin performance, cash generation and overall contract profitability.
- Ensure robust commercial controls are embedded across the project portfolio.
Risk, Governance & Compliance
- Identify, assess and proactively manage commercial and contractual risk.
- Ensure appropriate governance and commercial processes are followed across projects.
- Provide senior leadership with clear visibility of commercial risks, opportunities and potential exposure.
- Challenge assumptions and ensure commercial decisions are supported by robust analysis and evidence.
Leadership & Development
- Lead, support and develop a team of Quantity Surveyors and commercial professionals.
- Mentor developing surveyors and help build commercial capability within the division.
- Create a strong commercial culture focused on accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.
- Work closely with operational leadership to embed commercial thinking throughout the project lifecycle.
Requirements:
We're looking for an experienced commercial professional who can combine strong technical QS capability with commercial judgement and leadership.
You'll ideally bring:
- Significant Quantity Surveying/commercial experience within industrial services, construction, engineering, utilities, energy or infrastructure.
- Experience managing large-scale, complex contracts and commercial arrangements.
- Strong knowledge of contract administration, commercial management and project controls.
- A proven track record of managing budgets, forecasting performance and improving project margins.
- Strong experience in variations, claims, valuations, final accounts and commercial negotiations.
- Experience leading or mentoring commercial teams.
- The confidence to challenge, influence and partner with senior operational stakeholders.
- Strong analytical and financial skills, with the ability to turn commercial data into clear business decisions.
- A pragmatic, commercially minded approach and the ability to operate effectively in a demanding project environment.
- A full driving licence.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics or a related discipline.
- RICS, SCSI or equivalent professional accreditation would be advantageous.
- Strong understanding of construction and engineering contracts.
