Job description

The Engineering Lead is accountable for the overall engineering execution, people management, and technical direction of the product. Reporting directly to the CTO / Head of Product & Engineering, this role leads the engineering team end-to-end—covering delivery, architecture, quality, and team performance—while being supported by an Assistant Engineering Lead for day-to-day execution.

Responsibilities

• Own end-to-end engineering delivery across products, ensuring alignment with business priorities, timelines, and quality standards.
• Translate product and business requirements into clear technical execution plans and milestones.
• Ensure predictable delivery through effective sprint planning, backlog management, and prioritization.
• Be accountable for engineering output, delivery risks, and technical debt.
• Own technical and architectural decisions with a strong focus on scalability, performance, security, and maintainability.
• Remain hands‑on when needed: reviewing code, guiding implementation, and unblocking complex technical challenges.
• Ensure effective use of the company’s technology stack, including Node.js, TypeScript, GraphQL, and PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB.
• Balance short‑term delivery needs with long‑term system health.
• Lead, manage, and develop the engineering team, including performance management, feedback, and growth planning.
• Mentor engineers to improve technical skills, ownership, and problem‑solving ability.
• Delegate execution responsibilities to the Assistant Engineering Lead while retaining accountability for outcomes.
• Build a strong engineering culture centred on ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
• Establish and continuously improve engineering processes, including Agile/Scrum rituals, development standards, and release practices.
• Drive high product quality through code reviews, automated testing, monitoring, and performance optimisation.
• Ensure engineering best practices are applied consistently across the team, even in a fast‑moving lean environment.
• Partner closely with the CTO / Head of Product & Engineering on roadmap planning, capacity planning, and technical strategy.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and Business stakeholders to ensure engineering efforts directly support company goals.
• Communicate clearly on progress, risks, trade‑offs, and resource needs.
• Identify opportunities to improve engineering efficiency, tooling, and team structure as the company scales.
• Proactively address bottlenecks, technical risks, and resourcing gaps.
• Prepare the engineering function to scale without over‑engineering.

Requirements

• 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with 3+ years leading an engineering team or acting as an Engineering Manager / Lead.
• Strong hands‑on experience with Node.js, TypeScript, GraphQL, and PostgreSQL/TimescaleDB.
• Proven ability to design and maintain scalable, reliable systems in a production environment.
• Experience owning end-to-end delivery, including sprint planning, backlog management, and execution in an Agile/Scrum setup.
• Demonstrated people‑management skills, including mentoring, performance feedback, and team development.
• Comfortable working in a lean startup environment, balancing hands‑on work with leadership responsibilities.
• Strong communication skills and experience collaborating closely with Product, Business, and CTO‑level stakeholders.
