PACE Recreational Therapists work with participants to restore motor, social, and cognitive functioning, build confidence, develop coping skills, and integrate skills learned in treatment settings into community settings. Intervention areas vary widely and are based on client interests. Examples include creative arts (e.g., crafts, music, dance, drama), sports, adventure programming, dance/movement, and leisure education.

1. Develop, implement, and post a monthly calendar of recreation activities that meet the mental, physical, and psychosocial needs of ESP participants, as measured by ratings of the Activities Program in ESP’s consumer satisfaction survey, and feedback through Participant Council and Participant Advisory Council.
2. Ensure activity schedules include a variety of meaningful activities aligned with individual interests and functional needs of ESP participants.
3. If not certified or eligible for certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation or a similar body, collaborate with an Occupational Therapist to ensure group activities are consistent with participants’ cognitive, motor, balance, and other functional statuses.
4. Plan, attend, and organize outings and field trips to community events, incorporating them into the activities calendar.
5. Ensure personal care assistants (PCAs) are trained in new activities.
6. Assign PCAs to activity and personal care responsibilities based on individual competencies and roles.
7. Conduct morning huddles.
8. Consider individual PCA interests and strengths when assigning activity responsibilities.

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from a recognized accrediting body such as the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification; or a related field including occupational therapy, music, or art therapy, with experience in social or recreational programs.
2. At least five years of recent experience working in a social or recreational program, including one year full-time in a healthcare setting with responsibilities for activities planning and management, and completion of a certificate program in activities.
3. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with culturally and educationally diverse participants, families, and staff. Bilingual skills are a plus.
4. Proficiency in computer use to document and communicate clinical and non-clinical information.
5. Creativity, innovation, and organizational skills to manage various activities and responsibilities. Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.
6. Supervisory skills to develop and oversee direct care staff.
