St Hugh’s Hospital offers treatment across all major medical specialties and care at every step of the process, from initial consultations, assessments and diagnostic tests to treatment, rehabilitation and post‑operative care.

HMT St Hugh’s, along with their sister hospital HMT Sancta Maria in Swansea, has a mission to provide safe, high‑quality care in order to improve the health, wellbeing and independence of their patients. Part of the Healthcare Management Trust, HMT Sancta Maria is a non‑profit organisation using its surpluses to fund medical research, educational grants and dementia charities.

Main duties of the job

You’ll work alongside other passionate professionals who are committed to providing the best care. We foster a collaborative and supportive approach to learning that helps everyone succeed.

The post holder will be required to provide high standards of direct patient care to a variety of different surgical patients within the ward/day unit environment, enhancing patient care, while developing specific clinical competencies and enhancing own knowledge through a lifelong learning approach.

The post holder will work under the guidance of the ward manager and multi‑disciplinary team members in monitoring and maintaining excellent standards of nursing care as part of the ward team.

The post holder is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care with the guidance and support of more senior staff, be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover according to experience for any area specified.

The post holder will be accountable for their nursing practice, adhere to the policies and protocols of HMT and the NMC, have responsibility for their own personal and professional development and assist in the continuing professional development and overall performance of learners, e.g. student nurses and junior staff in the clinical area.

Job responsibilities

Communication

Develop effective communication skills and strategies within the department. Display excellent written and verbal communication, hold effective interpersonal and listening skills enabling optimum communication with patients, their families and the multi‑disciplinary team.

Work cohesively with all members of the ward team, ensuring that very best services to patients are provided at all times, keep accurate and complete records of patient documentation and care plans, ensure nursing documentation is maintained to HMT standards (including electronic records) and maintain confidentiality and data‑protection integrity.

Professional

The post holder must work in accordance with the NMC Code, demonstrate knowledge and skills related to evidence‑based practice, maintain confidentiality surrounding patient admissions and treatment, promote the HMT image, and ensure all patient care is documented accurately within agreed timescales using approved documentation in line with NMC and local standards.

Order tests and clinical investigations as directed, use the client IT systems and access results appropriately, ensuring correct results are documented.

Planning and Organising

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programs of care, actively seeking evidence‑based practice to improve quality of care and meet the needs of patients. Adopt a holistic approach that includes physiological, pathological, spiritual, socio‑economic and cultural aspects influencing care.

Implement a nursing plan for an assigned group of patients, indicate assessment and re‑assessment for individual care pathways and discharge planning, prioritise workload as ward acuity requires, maintain excellent clinical standards of nursing practice, contribute to setting goals and benchmarking standards of care, and develop tools and guidelines (e.g. NICE) in line with quality governance.

Analytical

Identify potential risks and carry out risk assessments consistent with organisation policies, procedures and legal requirements. Report accidents/faults immediately, complete incident records, report actions taken, place faulty equipment out of commission, attend health‑safety training and ensure continuity of care between home and hospital/clinic, advocate and decide autonomously on patient care, provide a plan of care using evidence‑based practice, and respond appropriately to changing demands, prioritising accordingly.

Task Specific Skills

Knowledge and experience in surgical nursing, working with complex surgical patients across diverse specialties, assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, administer injections, venepuncture, take blood pressure, use keyboard, mechanical equipment, transfer patients, fit prescribed splints, identify deteriorating patients, manage change within recognised timescales, maintain safe environment pre‑ and post‑surgery, monitor vital signs, safely administer medications, ensure accurate documentation, basic/intermediate life support, safeguard reporting, teaching and mentoring awareness, competency with computers and clinical systems, understanding of clinical governance and audits, work autonomously and within a team, hold valid NMC registration and revalidation, knowledge of the private sector, experience in a consultant‑led environment, collaborate with ward team, delegate tasks, promote healthy lifestyle, apply research to practice, maintain ward/department ethos and provide standard nursing care.

Training and Professional Development

Successfully complete induction programme, participate in HMT appraisal and personal development plan schemes, attend mandatory training, participate in preceptorship programmes, contribute to a positive learning environment, serve as a resource for learners and nursing team, complete revalidation requirements, maintain a personal and professional profile, stay up‑to‑date with evidence‑based practice and surgical initiatives, supervise other team members, ensure safe equipment use and deliver training, undertake clinical supervision per local requirements.

Health and Safety

Provide an environment ensuring safety and welfare of patients and staff by complying with Health & Safety at Work Act, Fire Prevention and Management, COSHH, risk assessment processes, safer handling principles and guidelines, infection prevention and control principles and guidelines, demonstrate awareness of HMT policies, clinical governance and patient safety rounds, report clinical risks, ensure suitable safe environment for staff and patients, record and report incidents/complaints in line with HMT policies and assist investigations.
