Jobbeschreibung
Coastal Modeller – National Oceanography Centre, Liverpool

Salary: £28,200 – £32,430 (depending on skills and experience)
Contract Type: This is a Fixed Term Appointment, available for 2 years, offered on NERC Terms and Conditions and is open to internal and external candidates
Hours: The hours of working are full time, 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Closing Date: 9th September 2018

About the role:

We seek a talented and enthusiastic Coastal Scientist to join the vibrant Marine Systems Modelling group at NOC in Liverpool, UK. You will work with numerical models of near-coastal environments to improve our understanding of shallow-water processes and land-sea interactions.

You will use a variety of numerical models to:

  • implement and develop a nearshore wave model
  • evaluate the performance of coupled hydrodynamic and wave models.

The work will be split between two projects with respective emphasis on Official Development Assistence (ODA) for Bangladesh and on wave modelling in the coastal zone. For the ODA project, we use UK marine National Capability to support resilience to climate change and natural hazards in Bangladesh. The science focuses on transport pathways in complex deltas and how coastal circulation is influenced by natural and human factors. A better understanding of the complex sediment pathways in the Ganges Delta region will help local authorities and policy makers. Part of this role involves close working with academic partners and government agencies in Bangladesh.

The second project will be focussed on spectral wave modelling in the coastal zone. You will collaborate with the UK Met Office to evaluate new developments in the coupled UK Environmental Prediction model. We aim to develop a synthesis of model and observations, using remotely sensed data from satellite and radar platforms. We will combine a spectral wave model with X-band radar technology to produce the most likely estimate of ocean wave conditions. The development of robust, operational, wave predictions and monitoring supports the Marine Renewable Energy sector in the U.K.

Timely publications in high impact scientific journals is a key outcome of both strands of this work. This is a Fixed Term Appointment (FTA), initially available for two years offered on NERC terms and conditions.

About you:

You will have a degree in a numerate science, engineering or mathematics discipline and have achieved a PhD or have equivalent research experience in physical oceanography or other numerate environmental science. You are expected to have experience in numerical ocean modelling, ideally in coastal environments. Experience with unstructured models and spectral wave models is highly desirable. You will be a skilled scientific programmer, ideally experienced with FORTRAN and familiar with writing code and scripts. You should enjoy working in a collaborative environment and have excellent communication, oral, written and presentational skill, including experience in scientific writing. Experience of handling and manipulating large data-sets is also desirable.

What we can offer you:

At the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) we know that the quality of our science and the impact that we want it to have depends entirely on the knowledge, skills and engagement of our people. The NOC is committed to flexible employment practices to support employees’ work and personal commitments where possible. Our flexi-time system and flexible working policy contribute to this important aim.

In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 14 Public/local days off. The centre is well connected by public transport and has ample cycle parking in addition low cost car-parking. We support opportunities for further training and development.
