Job description

Would you like the opportunity to earn while you learn, work towards a professional qualification and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council?

We are looking to recruit motivated and committed trainee pharmacy technicians to undertake a 2-year distance learning training programme during which you will work towards the Diploma in Pharmacy Services. This includes completing the PDA in Pharmacy Services (SCQF 7) and SVQ in Pharmacy Services (SCQF 8) while developing your knowledge and skills under the supervision and support of our pharmacy team.

As a Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technician, you may rotate through various areas of pharmacy which could include primary care pharmacy, community pharmacy and hospital pharmacy departments learning key skills such as

  • Dispensing prescriptions and understanding the different types of prescriptions
  • Shadowing Pharmacy Technicians working in GP practices
  • Participating in medicines management activities
  • Understanding and using Standard Operating Procedures and risk management processes
  • Understanding the uses of medicines in different clinical areas (e.g. diabetes)
  • Stock supplies
  • Undertaking audits
  • Working with different IT systems

We are looking for diligent, enthusiastic individuals committed to improving patient care and working within the Pharmacy Team in all areas of pharmacy. Commitment to the completion of the required study is essential and you will require excellent organisational skills to balance the on-the-job requirements and academic aspects of this post. Applicants should evidence an enthusiasm for learning and development, a professional attitude and a passion for working within the wider healthcare care team.

You must have National 5 qualifications (or Intermediate 2 or Credit Standard Grades) at Grade A to C in Chemistry, Biology, Maths and English/ESOL OR the equivalent SCQF level of qualification/award as a minimum. Previous pharmacy experience and holding an SVQ in Pharmacy Services at SCQF Level 6 (or equivalent) is desirable but not essential.

A trainee post with Annex 21 applied is paid a percentage of the fully qualified rate during the period of training as follows:
Year 1: 70% of the pay band maximum
Year 2: 75% of the pay band maximum.

Upon successful completion of the 2 year training programme and registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council you will join the Primary Care Pharmacy Team at Band 4 and have the opportunity to continue your career by completing the NHS Education Scotland Vocational Training Foundation Programme for Pharmacy Technicians.
