At McLaren, our mission is to set the standard for high performance in sport. And everyone, in every part of the team, has a role to play. So if you want to test your ideas with the world watching... And measure your progress in milliseconds... And play your part in racing history... You belong here. High performance starts with you.

Purpose of the Role:

Provide full life-cycle electronic and electrical design support for the build, calibration, inspection and maintenance for all aspects of the electronic systems used for the Formula 1 Racing programme. This includes hands-on involvement in the physical delivery of on-car instrumentation, as well as contributing to ongoing engineering projects aimed at improving the quality and reliability of vehicle data through continuous development of advanced instrumentation systems.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Prepare, calibrate, and maintain precision control and instrumentation sensors for the F1 racing programme.

  • Ensure high system reliability, serviceability, and data quality across all instrumentation activities.

  • Coordinate daily and seasonal tasks with internal teams to align with project and racing timelines.

  • Collaborate with external suppliers on production, calibration, and fault resolution.

  • Generate and maintain accurate documentation to support traceability and compliance.

  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance reliability, reduce weight, and simplify maintenance.

  • Monitor equipment performance, trends, and escalate technical or quality issues as needed.

  • Conduct root-cause investigations and support fault correction and reliability initiatives.

  • Manage cost-related considerations and recommend savings in design, materials, and processes.

  • Ensure compliance with FIA technical and financial regulations.

  • Uphold safety standards and support adherence to HSE and COSHH guidelines.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Strong background in motorsport, automotive, or aerospace electronic systems.

  • Proven expertise in assembling and testing high-reliability wiring harnesses using motorsport-standard materials and connectors.

  • Skilled in using hand tools, soldering irons, multimeters, and electronic test equipment.

  • Knowledgeable in precision instrumentation, transducers, and calibration processes used in professional motorsport.

  • Comfortable interpreting mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and electronic documentation.

  • Experience with precision electronics, including handling small surface-mount components (e.g. 0603 size).

  • Familiar with CAN, Ethernet, and other high-speed communication hardware layers.

  • Understanding of F1 or high-level motorsport environments, timelines, and technical protocols.

  • Experience working with composite and 3D-printed materials for enclosures and housings.

  • Mentored and trained junior staff and new team members in a structured way.

  • Knowledge of safe handling practices for complex and high-value electronics (e.g. ESD and HV precautions).

  • Built and managed large, complex harness systems with over 100 wires, including EMI shielding and environmental protection.

  • Familiar with business systems for work planning, component tracking, batch tracing, and reliability management.

  • CAD design experience (mechanical/electrical/electronic) is a plus.

Personal Attributes:

  • Meticulous and accurate approach to working standards and practices and the highest possible professional standards

  • Clear and concise communicator both written and verbally and comfortable communicating with all levels of the team

  • Willingness to take the initiative and escalate a concern or issue to lead

  • Ability to take a holistic view of the work being undertaken within the group and awareness of overall team objectives and protocols

  • Confidence with handling and working on mission and safety critical equipment e.g. Steering wheels, Gearbox control wiring, electronic braking systems.

  • Adaptable and flexible approach to the work demanded by the team with a willingness to support all objectives and activities of the team and to support other team members to do the same.
