Job summary

Tilbury Douglas is offering a Year Out Placement for students in Civil/Structural or Building Services Engineering and Construction Management. The role is site-based in Shotley Bridge within the North East Regional Building team, with travel across regional project sites.

You will gain hands‑on experience across engineering and construction management, supporting site activities, safety, quality, programme and commercial considerations while developing practical skills for delivery of projects.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Construction Management or a related built environment discipline with a placement year.
• Full UK driving licence, or working towards obtaining one by February 2027.
• Strong problem-solving skills with a practical and logical approach.

Responsibilities

• Assist with day-to-day management of site operations to deliver works safely and in line with the programme.
• Develop understanding of how construction and engineering works are delivered safely, efficiently and to required standards.
• Contribute to setting out, surveying and engineering control activities on site.
• Support preparation of method statements, risk assessments, inspection/test plans, and quality documentation.
• Coordinate subcontractors, suppliers and site teams.
• Attend planning meetings and progress reviews.
• Monitor project progress, quality, health and safety, and environmental performance.
• Support site logistics and sequencing of construction activities.
• Review drawings and technical information, translating into construction activities.
• Collaborate with design, commercial and operational teams to resolve challenges.
• Understand commercial processes and cost control.
• Produce and maintain site records and project documentation.
• Gain experience in modern construction methods, sustainability and digital tools.
• Build relationships with project teams, clients, consultants and supply chain partners.
• Take on increasing responsibility as skills grow.
