Job summary

Tilbury Douglas is offering a Year Out Civil Engineer placement to apply university studies to live infrastructure projects. The role is site-based with travel across Yorkshire sites in the South West Water Framework team, Devon location, and learning from experienced professionals.

You’ll gain hands-on experience in setting out, surveying, coordination and construction delivery, building practical skills and confidence for your final year and future career in civil engineering.

Qualifications

• Currently studying towards a Civil Engineering degree and undertaking a placement year.
• Full UK driving licence or working towards by Feb 2027.
• Strong problem-solving skills with a practical and logical approach.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Collaborative mindset with a willingness to learn and take on responsibility.
• Previous placement or site experience is desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, coordination and delivery of civil engineering and construction activities.
• Carry out setting out, surveying and engineering control under supervision.
• Review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and technical information.
• Help ensure works are delivered accurately and in accordance with design information and standards.
• Support the preparation of method statements, risk assessments and QA documentation.
• Assist with quality inspections and maintain accurate site records.
• Identify and resolve technical issues with engineers and constructors.
• Coordinate subcontractors and supply chain partners.
• Attend meetings and develop understanding of temporary works and buildability.
• Monitor progress, quality, health & safety and environmental performance.
