Job summary

Tilbury Douglas is offering a Civil Engineer Year Out Placement. This site-based role spans Devon and Yorkshire, giving you hands-on experience in planning, setting out, surveying and project delivery on water infrastructure projects.

You’ll work with a live project team, learning how designs translate into built projects while travelling across sites as needed. You will gain practical knowledge through setting out, coordination, quality control and safety, mentored by seasoned engineers and

Qualifications

• Currently studying for a Civil Engineering degree or closely related discipline.
• Placement year as part of studies.
• Full UK driving licence or working towards by Feb 2027.
• Strong problem-solving with a practical, logical approach.
• Good written and verbal communication.
• Collaborative mindset with willingness to learn and take on responsibility.
• Previous placement or site experience is desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Assist with planning, coordination and delivery of civil engineering and construction activities.
• Carry out setting out, surveying and engineering control activities under supervision.
• Review and interpret engineering drawings, specs and technical information.
• Help ensure works are delivered in line with design information and standards.
• Support method statements, risk assessments, inspection plans and quality documentation.
• Assist with site records and quality inspections.
• Identify and resolve technical issues with engineers and construction teams.
• Coordinate subcontractors and supply chain partners.
• Attend meetings and contribute as knowledge develops.
• Develop understanding of temporary works, methods and buildability.
