Job summary

Kemp Recruitment Limited is seeking a hands-on Workshop Controller to run a busy municipal fleet workshop in Barnstaple. The role requires leadership to manage day-to-day operations and keep a mixed fleet on the road.

The successful candidate will diagnose and repair, plan servicing, manage stock and paperwork, and lead the workshop team with strong organisational skills. Salary is £55,000 with 40-hour weeks and 40-hour shifts.

Qualifications

• Proven experience in an HGV or municipal workshop environment.
• Strong people management and organisational skills.
• Confident with diagnostics, fleet maintenance and compliance.
• Comfortable using vehicle management systems and completing accurate paperwork.

Responsibilities

• Lead from the front as the senior technician while controlling daily workshop activity.
• Plan workloads, schedule servicing and MOTs, and keep vehicles on the road.
• Diagnose, maintain and repair a mixed fleet of light and heavy vehicles.
• Control job cards, paperwork, parts ordering and stock levels.
• Provide technical support to the team and maintain high quality standards.
• Liaise confidently with colleagues, suppliers and stakeholders.
• Manage rotas, holidays and standby cover to ensure full workshop coverage.

The successful Workshop Controller will receive

• HGV Category C licence preferred
• Apprenticeship, HNC or equivalent in automotive engineering (CPC an advantage)
