Career Choices Dewis Gyrfa Ltd. is recruiting on behalf of a leading Manchester-based commercial vehicle service provider for a senior Workshop Controller. You will lead a busy workshop, deliver high quality workmanship and drive performance.

The role offers a competitive salary (£45,000–£55,000), a 4 on/4 off shift pattern from 6:00am to 6:00pm, progression opportunities, and a pension with enhanced employer contributions. Strong leadership and technical expertise are essential.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a workshop controller or supervisor in commercial/heavy vehicle sector.
• Knowledge of VOSA MOT testing procedures and operator’s licence compliance.
• Relevant qualifications such as City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 in Motor Vehicle Technology.
• Strong leadership and organisational skills.
• Excellent communication and ability to work under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations of a commercial vehicle workshop.
• Ensure high-quality workmanship with minimal rectification.
• Maximise technician productivity and workshop utilisation.
• Monitor labour efficiency and address under-performance.
• Coordinate handover of complex jobs with customers.
• Ensure compliance with manufacturer processes, H&S, MOT, and VOSA standards.
• Lead and supervise workshop team including technicians and support staff.
• Support planning and allocation of workloads.

• Manage the daily operations and performance of the commercial vehicle workshop
• Oversee delivery of high-quality workmanship, ensuring minimal rectification and customer complaints
• Maximise technician productivity and workshop utilisation
• Monitor labour efficiency and address any under performance
• Coordinate the handover of complex or contentious jobs with customers
• Ensure compliance with manufacturer processes, health and safety legislation, MOT regulations, and VOSA standards
• Maintain a safe and professional working environment
• Supervise workshop team members, including technicians and support staff
• Monitor KPIs and ensure departmental targets are achieved
• Assist with the planning and allocation of workloads
• Support continuous improvement and ensure adherence to industry best practices
• Requirements of a Workshop Controller:
• Proven experience as a workshop controller, workshop supervisor, or workshop manager within the commercial vehicle or heavy vehicle sector
• Knowledge of VOSA requirements and MOT testing procedures
• Understanding of Operators' Licence legislation and compliance standards
• Relevant technical qualifications such as City & Guilds or NVQ Level 3 in Motor Vehicle Technology or Heavy Vehicle Maintenance
• Strong leadership and organisational skills
• Excellent communication abilities, both written and verbal
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and make confident decisions
• Good IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office
• Prior management experience within a busy workshop environment is essential
