Overview

Job summary: The appointee will help with ongoing research projects and work on a research proposal leading to an MD or PhD. The HPB unit works closely with the University of Plymouth with opportunities to work on lab-based research. The post is funded by the GI directorate and involves a regular weekly after-hours on-call commitment shared with other research registrars. The post holder will be part of the surgical department within the GI, surgery and all clinical work will take place at Derriford Hospital. There is an on-call commitment during day/nights/weekends.

Main duties include receiving close supervision, mentorship and research training, with opportunities to develop teaching skills within the department and through the undergraduate teaching programme. OG Surgery service at University Hospital Plymouth collaborates with the University of Plymouth Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and provides extensive teaching for medical students.

Responsibilities

• The appointee will work under supervision to develop surgical experience and a research portfolio supporting career progression.
• Engagement in research up to MD level, subject to satisfactory progress.
• Participation in teaching and undergraduate education within the department.
• Contribute to the general surgical on-call rota at University Hospital Plymouth and fulfil limited-service requirements for the OG Outpatient Department.
• Work alongside the GI directorate and University of Plymouth to support research and teaching activities.
