A new opportunity has arisen to join our friendly, dedicated General Surgery team. Applications are invited for the post of Trust Doctor (F2 Equivalent Level). This post will be based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. This post will be part of a rota which covers the surgical service 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
The holder will be responsible for seeing and assessing acute referrals into the service, and initiating management plans. There will always be a registrar and consultant in each service on call (weekdays always available, at weekends may be in theatre but readily contactable). The shifts when not assigned to carry the on call bleep the doctor will be expected to provide support to the FY1 doctors on the ward and attend the post‑take ward round. They will then be timetabled to either attend clinics, theatres or to undertake quality improvement projects thus increasing the educational opportunities available to them.
These posts give the opportunity to gain experience and confidence in the diagnosis and management of general surgical emergencies. With the opportunity for gaining clinical experience in theatre there is the potential to gain competence in the surgical management of common emergencies such as acute abscesses, hernias and appendicitis.
Access will be given to an E‑portfolio to enable doctors to collect evidence of their development and competencies. All will be allocated an Educational Supervisor to oversee their development and a clinical supervisor will be allocated to oversee work in an individual placement. By working through the competencies outlined in the Foundation Programme Curriculum 2016 successful candidates can work towards achieving competency in all 20 Professional Capabilities.
