Job summary

Citizens Advice in Southwark is offering a fast-tracked Trainee Generalist Advice Caseworker programme. This full-time role starts as a five-month trainee period with a view to permanent Generalist Adviser on a higher salary.

You will handle direct advice and casework on social welfare issues, progressing through intense training and gaining experience across multiple channels—face-to-face, phone, email and outreach. The role requires strong analytical, communication and organisational skills.

Qualifications

• Ability to analyse and interpret complex information and relay it clearly.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for client-facing work.
• Numeracy skills to understand statistics and calculations.
• Organise and prioritise own work in a pressured environment.
• Knowledge of social policy issues affecting local communities.
• Understanding of advice needs in diverse inner-city areas.
• Able to use ICT in providing advice.
• Willingness to work outside normal hours and across sites.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality advice, advocacy and representation to clients in line with quality standards.
• Manage client casework, including interviews, research, follow-ups, referrals and maintaining records.
• Deliver advice through face-to-face appointments, telephone, email, home visits and outreach in Southwark.
• Keep up to date with relevant legislation, social policy, local developments and advice procedures.
• Complete training and participate in ongoing professional development, supervision and appraisals.
• Identify emerging issues and contribute to research, campaigns and policy influence.
• Collaborate with colleagues, external agencies and local organisations to support clients.
