Job summary

IonQ, Inc. in Oxford, UK is hiring for a hands-on System Software engineer dedicated to building and operating the control plane software that keeps quantum systems calibrated and productive.

You will work closely with runtime and systems teams to manage real-time control, scheduling, and exclusive access to hardware resources. The role emphasizes hands-on coding, strong debugging, and deep expertise in scalable software systems.

Qualifications

• Expert systems engineering skills with a focus on reliable, durably stored state.
• Experience building and operating stateful services in production with attention to error handling and observability.
• Ability to reason about complex scheduling and workflow systems and write design decisions in writing.

Responsibilities

• Work across the control plane services to ensure durable, recoverable operation.
• Diagnose live-system failures and perform deep diagnostic work under load.
• Define service boundaries and migrate code between them with care.
• Write verifiable, demonstrable correctness proofs for designs.
• Build tooling and testing infrastructure to accelerate delivery.
• Evolve deployment/operational practices as the fleet grows.
• Contribute to high-quality code and peer reviews to raise standards.
