Job description

An exciting job opportunity for a full time band 5 staff nurse has become available on ward 10 MDCU in Broadgreen Hospital. Ward 10 is open Monday - Friday 08:00 - 18:00pm, closed bank holidays and weekends ( this may change in the near future ).

Ward 10 MDCU covers numerous specialties which include Dermatology, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory, Clinical Chemistry, Endocrinology, Renal iron deficiency, Gastro iron deficiency, non cancerous chemotherapy for vasculitis and some haematology and immunology. It is a very busy day unit treating around 70 patients per day. The successful applicant will learn new skills such as venesections, attending full day courses to deliver non cancerous chemotherapy, and a variety of treatments including IV therapy and injections.

Responsibilities
  • Venepuncture and cannulation.
  • IV therapy, subcutaneous and IM injections.
  • Recording observations.
  • Learning venesections.
  • Attending Cytotoxic study day to learn how to deliver safe non‑cancerous chemotherapy.
  • Being responsible and accountable for the assessment, delivery and evaluation of nursing care.
  • Assisting in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs.
  • Working within the NMC Code of Professional Contact.
  • Maintaining a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers.
  • Determining nursing priorities and planning patient care.
  • Informing the nurse in charge when conditions may affect patient care.
  • Maintaining nursing records in accordance with NMC and Trust guidelines.
  • Improving quality of patient care through contribution to Essence of Care and clinical benchmarking.
  • Ensuring due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
  • Providing information and support to patients/carers and ensuring everyone is aware of changes in condition.
  • Developing clinical knowledge and skills to care for acutely ill patients admitted via planned and unplanned routes.
  • Undertaking expanded practice under supervision to optimise patient care per ward/department and Trust policies.
  • Involving patients and carers in planning and delivery of care.
  • Ensuring effective communication within the ward/department multidisciplinary team.
  • Acting as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and undertaking delegated tasks from the ward sister/charge nurse.
  • Taking charge of ward/department for a span of duty after successful completion of the foundation gateway.
  • Contributing to an effective and responsive clinical learning environment.
  • Acting as a mentor for pre‑registration students after completing the preceptorship period.
  • Maintaining personal professional development records and continuously improving competence.
  • Participating in research, audit and development of new ideas, and implementing research/audit findings with the unit team.
  • Attending induction/orientation and mandatory study days.
