Job Responsibilities
  • The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of the care of critically ill patients.
  • Work to provide an integrated critical care service.
  • Apply competency in Critical Care Band 5 to provide specialist treatments and monitoring unique to critical care, and support the Matron, Team Leaders and Practice Educator in delivering flexible, integrated services.
  • Support a client‑centred approach that delivers clinically effective and safe care to meet a wide range of critical care needs for patients and their significant others.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate individual patient care throughout a duty span, ensuring appropriate delivery and accurate note‑keeping.
  • Ensure all records and information used in the role are managed in line with NMC guidelines and Trust policies.
  • Monitor changes in patient condition and prioritise emergency and urgent care, initiating necessary treatments in accordance with medical instructions.
  • Maintain effective communication on all aspects of care with the patient and their significant others in sensitive or difficult circumstances, while preserving confidentiality.
  • Facilitate communication between relatives, consultants and arrange meetings as required.
  • Communicate effectively with senior nurses and colleagues.
  • Develop own practice to an exemplary level, guided by recommendations from the Trust, Network and National bodies.
  • Access support and supervision to enhance continued development, participating in unit development opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other MDT professionals such as Physiotherapy, Pharmacy and Dietetics to meet patient needs.
  • Maintain NMC registration and comply with statutory requirements.
  • Arrange admissions and discharges of patients in accordance with unit practice.
  • Organise transport for off‑unit procedures, e.g. CT scan.
  • Ensure appropriate use of all resources.
  • Respond promptly to complaints as per Trust policy, aiming to resolve them locally where possible and participating in investigations when required; record and report complaints to senior nurses.

  • Completion of a Critical Care course.
  • Appropriate UK professional registration (NMC) required.

Salary and Working Hours

Salary advertised is for full‑time hours. Posts less than 37.5 hours per week will be paid pro‑rata. New entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the first pay point of the relevant band.
