Job summary

The Newman in London’s Fitzrovia is seeking a hands-on Shift Engineer to join our Engineering team. You will maintain hotel operations, from guest-room maintenance to building systems, ensuring safety and high standards for our guests.

Reporting to the Chief Engineer, you will perform planned and reactive maintenance, diagnose faults, and support health and safety, with a 12-hour shift pattern and opportunities for career development within a luxury property.

Qualifications

• 2-3 years hotel engineering or building maintenance experience.
• Experience in high-end hotel environments is preferred.
• Strong fault-finding and problem-solving abilities with a guest-focused approach.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance across the hotel.
• Diagnose and resolve faults across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems.
• Respond to guest and operational maintenance requests, minimising disruption.
• Complete scheduled PPMs, inspections, compliance checks, and maintenance records.
• Support general building fabric maintenance including minor repairs and carpentry.
• Collaborate with hotel departments and external contractors to resolve issues.

We are looking for an experienced and hands-on Shift Engineer to join our Engineering team at The Newman. Reporting to the Chief Engineer and Engineering Supervisor, you will take a proactive approach to planned and reactive maintenance, responding quickly to faults while identifying opportunities to prevent issues before they impact our guests or hotel operation.

About You and The Role

As a Shift Engineer at The Newman, you will:

• Carry out planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance across the hotel, ensuring all work is completed safely and to a high standard
• Diagnose and resolve faults across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, lighting, drainage, and general building systems
• Respond promptly to guest and operational maintenance requests, proactively identifying defects and minimising disruption to the guest experience
• Complete scheduled PPMs, inspections, compliance checks, meter readings, and maintenance records, supporting Health & Safety and fire and life-safety requirements
• Support general building fabric maintenance, including painting and decorating, minor repairs, making good, furniture repairs, and basic carpentry
• Respond calmly and effectively to engineering emergencies and work collaboratively with hotel departments and external contractors to resolve issues
• Have at least 2-3 years' experience in hotel engineering, building maintenance, facilities management, or a similar technical environment, ideally within a 4- or 5-star hotel, with relevant technical qualifications desirable
• Have strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills, a professional and guest-focused approach, and flexibility to work our 12-hour shift pattern of 7:00am-7:00pm and 10:00am-10:00pm, including weekends and bank holidays
