Service Manager
Location: Manchester
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000
The Client
Our client is an established lift company in Greater Manchester. They are looking for a Service Manager to take charge of day-to-day service and repairs delivery and to act as deputy to the Service & Repairs Director.
This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who knows Service Management and knows how to manage people. You will lead a team of field engineers, keep planned maintenance and call-outs on track and free up the Director to focus on the wider business.
The role of Service Manager
- Run planned maintenance, call-outs and repairs so contracted visits are completed and breakdowns are attended within agreed response times
- Directly manage the engineers, including one-to-ones, PDRs, performance, absence, holidays and the call-out rota
- Support apprentices and trainees, and spot engineers with the potential to progress
- Take an active part in recruiting engineers: agreeing what the team needs, interviewing and assessing technical ability and fit
- Make sure approved repairs are scheduled, resourced and completed right first time, and closed off so they can be invoiced promptly
- Follow up defects and thorough examination (LOLER) findings until they are closed
- Track repeat call-outs and refer recurring faults for technical support with the full job history
- Make sure safe systems of work are followed on every job, working closely with the SHEQ Manager on audits, toolbox talks and incident reporting
- Handle operational escalations and keep customers informed before they have to chase
- Work with the Service Office and Key Accounts teams, giving clear practical guidance and the delivery information they need
- Make sure jobs are updated accurately and on the day, and report on agreed KPIs
- Deputise for the Service & Repairs Director, covering the department when they are away
About You
- Solid working knowledge of lift service, maintenance and repair, gained within the lift industry
- Proven experience of directly managing a team, ideally field-based engineers
- Working knowledge of LOLER requirements and safe working practices on lifts (BS 7255)
- Experience of planning and prioritising work against contract commitments, SLAs and KPIs
- Confident with a job management or field service system and Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Excel, Teams)
- Confident dealing with customers face to face, including when things have gone wrong
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable
- Time on the tools as a lift engineer or technician
- NVQ Level 3 in lift engineering or equivalent
- Health and safety qualification such as IOSH Managing Safely
- Experience of managing against a budget or targets
What's on offer
- Salary of £40,000 - £50,000, depending on experience
- A genuinely senior role with real influence, working directly with the Director
- Structured support, with clear expectations and a well-defined remit
