Job summary

Abingdon and Witney College is seeking a Senior Workshop Technician (Construction) to join the Bicester Construction Campus. You will lead the workshop, support teaching staff with practical delivery, and manage tools, stock and safety compliance, while ensuring a high-quality learning environment for 16–18 learners.

The role involves planning demonstrations, inductions and equipment training, supervising students, and maintaining workshop organisation and safety standards on a day-to-day basis.

Qualifications

• Level 2 qualification in a relevant construction trade.
• Willing to support across plumbing, electrical installation and wood trades.
• Strong practical knowledge of workshop tools, equipment and processes.
• Experience working within a construction or workshop environment.
• Good communication and organisational skills.
• Understanding of health and safety in a workshop or construction setting.
• Ability to support students aged 16-18.

Responsibilities

• Act as the lead technical specialist within the workshop, supporting teaching staff with practical delivery, materials and equipment selection.
• Support and supervise students in developing their practical skills, ensuring a safe and engaging learning environment.
• Plan and deliver technical demonstrations, inductions and equipment training for students and staff.
• Take responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the workshop, including maintaining high standards of organisation and housekeeping.
• Ensure full compliance with health and safety legislation, including risk assessments, COSHH and safe systems of work.
• Manage tools, equipment and stock, including ordering materials, liaising with suppliers and conducting regular stock audits.
• Assist with equipment maintenance, fault finding and arranging servicing where necessary.

• Willing to support across all the trade areas we offer, these include; plumbing, electrical installation and wood trades to which training and support will be provided.
• Strong practical knowledge of workshop tools, equipment and processes.
• Experience working within a construction or workshop environment.
• Good communication and organisational skills.
• Understanding of health and safety in a workshop or construction setting.
• Ability to support students of all ages, particularly 16-18 learners.

Desirable:

• Experience supervising or coordinating others.
• Experience delivering training or mentoring learners.
• Health and safety qualifications (e.g. IOSH) or willingness to work towards.
