Senior Specialist Engineer: Heavy Equipment Diagnostics

Job summary

SMT is seeking a Specialist Engineer based at our Brownhills depot to act as a subject matter expert, supporting the effective maintenance, diagnosis and performance of Volvo construction equipment. You will drive technical excellence across the depot and support both internal teams and customers with complex issues.

You will work closely with Customer Support Representatives, engineers and management to ensure a consistent and high-quality approach to problem solving and service delivery,

Qualifications

• Formal engineering qualification (mechanical, electrical or automotive).
• Significant experience servicing heavy construction equipment (Volvo desirable).
• Advanced diagnostic and fault-finding skills across hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems.
• Experience mentoring engineers and sharing best practices.
• Strong communication with customers and stakeholders.
• Root cause analysis with long-term solution focus.
• Attention to detail and commitment to safe working practices.
• IT literate with diagnostic tools and systems.
• Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Acting as the primary point of contact for complex technical queries and escalations.
• Diagnosing and troubleshooting advanced mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults.
• Providing on-site and remote technical support to engineers and customers.
• Delivering technical training, coaching and guidance to develop team capability.
• Supporting root cause analysis and implementing preventative solutions.
• Monitoring equipment performance and identifying opportunities for improvement.
• Assisting with the rollout of new technologies, systems and service processes.
• Collaborating with wider business functions to drive service efficiency and customer satisfaction.
