Job summary

SMT GB in Brownhills near Birmingham is seeking a Specialist Engineer to become the technical authority at the depot, supporting Volvo Construction Equipment. This senior role requires leading by example, guiding diagnosis, and sharing expertise with the service team to maximise uptime.

You will work with Field Service Engineers, Workshop Engineers, and customers, deliver technical leadership, coach engineers, and drive safety, quality and continuous improvement while staying hands-on.

Qualifications

• An engineering qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive or related discipline.
• Significant experience maintaining, repairing and diagnosing heavy plant or construction equipment.
• Experience guiding engineers and providing technical leadership.

Responsibilities

• Act as the lead escalation point for complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronic faults.
• Support engineers with advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting and repair strategies both remotely and on-site.
• Carry out root cause investigations and implement long-term corrective actions.
• Work with Volvo technical support teams to resolve challenging machine issues.
• Provide coaching and technical guidance to engineers across the service operation.
• Support apprentice development and upskilling of engineering colleagues.
• Analyse machine health, service data and recurring failures to identify improvements.
• Assist with new product introductions, software updates and emerging technologies.
• Promote safety, quality and service delivery best practices.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives for reliability and workshop efficiency.
