Job description

Position: Senior & Principal Design Engineers

Location: Bristol or Exeter with hybrid working available

Rate Guide: £60-75k (Neg DOE) plus car allowance and excellent benefits package

About the Client

Our client is an integrated design and build provider working in the water sector. With over 1,000 staff across eight regional centres, they support six long‑term water sector frameworks and two recently won frameworks, operating both as a sole contractor and in joint ventures and alliances.

Role Overview

Based in the Southwest region at either Bristol or Exeter, you will report directly to the Principal Engineer or Regional Discipline Lead. Your role will be to provide superior quality engineering design services to minimise risk and maximise profit on turnkey and engineering services contracts. You will coordinate design, produce design documents and drawings, and ensure compliance with health and safety requirements, specifications and standards.

Responsibilities
  • Produce cost‑effective design layouts that meet specifications and can be constructed and commissioned effectively, considering all costs associated with design and construction.
  • Utilise standard practices wherever possible and maintain competitiveness.
  • Provide estimates and feedback for the Proposals department.
  • Work to procedures and processes to ensure the continuing development of the department.
  • Assist in developing, monitoring and reviewing procedures and processes.
  • Write, update and monitor efficient procedures to aid smooth running of the department.
  • Ensure coordination of designs with all other disciplines internal and external for the benefit of the entire contract.
  • Maintain files and records throughout contract duration.
  • Assure customer satisfaction and support a customer‑centric culture.
  • Assist in supervising and developing staff.
  • Ensure a safe working environment for all staff.
  • Ensure designs account for environmental issues and comply with health and safety requirements.
Qualifications
  • Experience in technical delivery of complex water industry engineering projects.
  • Understanding of the principles of water and sewage treatment.
  • Experience managing/mentoring staff in designing relevant discipline aspects of water and sewage treatment plants.
  • Membership of a professional institution chartered or nearing chartership.
  • Relevant discipline engineering qualification.
  • Ability to rationalise designs and produce economic plant layouts.
  • General knowledge of all aspects of water treatment, including electrical, process, civil engineering and project management.
  • Flexible mindset, able to assimilate large amounts of diverse data.
  • Ability to present technical proposals clearly, confidently and convincingly.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Driving licence.
  • Experience working on design and construct projects using digital design tools.
