Job summary

MWH Treatment is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design activities across major water and wastewater projects. You will develop equipment specs, plant layouts and documentation to deliver safe, buildable solutions that meet client requirements and regulatory standards.

The role involves coordinating with Process, Civil, Electrical and Commissioning teams, identifying risks, mentoring junior engineers, and building strong relationships with clients and suppliers.

Qualifications

• Strong experience in mechanical design within water/wastewater/utilities or a regulated engineering environment.
• Good understanding of water and sewage treatment processes and mechanical systems.
• Experience producing and reviewing mechanical calculations, specifications and design reports.
• Ability to develop practical, buildable mechanical solutions considering safety and whole-life cost.
• Experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams and supporting project delivery.
• Experience leading or mentoring engineers in a mechanical discipline.
• Membership of a relevant professional institution, ideally Chartered or working towards Chartership.
• Relevant Mechanical Engineering degree or minimum HND in related discipline.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design tasks and packages to agreed technical standards, budgets and programmes.
• Develop mechanical designs, equipment specifications, plant layouts and technical documentation that support safe, efficient and reliable asset performance.
• Produce cost-effective mechanical solutions that consider construction, commissioning, operational and whole-life costs.
• Review and assure mechanical design outputs within your area of authority, ensuring quality and compliance with company and industry standards.
• Coordinate mechanical design activities with Process, EICA, Civil, Structural, Digital and Commissioning teams to support integrated project delivery.
• Identify and manage technical risks, design issues and opportunities for optimisation throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support the design and selection of mechanical equipment, including pumps, pipework, valves, treatment plant equipment and associated systems.
• Mentor junior engineers, graduates and apprentices, sharing knowledge and supporting technical development across the team.
• Build strong working relationships with clients, discipline leads, project teams, suppliers and site teams.
