Job summary

Arup is seeking a highly experienced engineer to provide technical leadership and strategic delivery of transmission cable system designs. The role combines deep HV design expertise with leadership responsibilities, ensuring high‑quality HVAC/HVDC solutions across diverse projects and ensuring compliance with IEC/IEEE standards.

You will oversee the full lifecycle of HV transmission cable systems, drive design innovation, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to tendering and technology

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; Chartered Engineer status essential.
• Experience in high‑voltage transmission cable design (HV/EHV systems).
• Proven track record of leading engineering teams and delivering large‑scale projects.
• Strong knowledge of IEC, IEEE, and other relevant standards.
• Working knowledge in advanced design software (such as CDEGS, CYMCAP, Comsol, AutoCAD or equivalent).
• Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
• Previous National Grid experience (preferred but not essential).

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership and strategic delivery of HV cable system designs.
• Define best‑in‑class design practices for HVAC/HVDC cable projects.
• Oversee full lifecycle of high‑voltage transmission cable systems (AC/DC, overhead/underground).
• Lead design reviews, mentoring, and talent development within the team.
• Support tendering with insights and cost‑optimisation strategies.
• Champion new technology initiatives and advance design methodologies.
