Job summary

SP Energy Networks is recruiting a Senior Cable Design Engineer for the Prenton area with a hybrid working pattern. This role focuses on high‑voltage cable systems from 33kV to 132kV, delivering engineering solutions to keep electricity flowing across North Wales and North West England.

The successful candidate will manage feasibility through detailed design, prepare specifications, review drawings, mentor staff, and drive safety and best practice using Cymcap and CDM principles, including

Qualifications

• Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent practical experience in high-voltage cable engineering.
• Significant proven experience in an accountable position working with high-voltage power cables and associated equipment.
• Proficiency in using Cymcap software for cable design and evaluation.
• Ability to implement, apply, and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice within a design environment.
• Capability to represent departments or project teams on cable engineering matters, making informed judgments and advocating for industry standards and best practice.
• Experience in assessing engineering documentation for feasibility and compliance with client requirements, preparing accurate project budgets, and delivering quality documentation.
• Experience preparing Project Quality Plans (PQPs) and ensuring all deliverables are met to the required standard.
• Effective communication and coordination skills, enabling you to work across multi-disciplinary teams and provide clear technical guidance to stakeholders at all levels.
• Proactive approach to problem-solving, with the ability to investigate complex technical issues and develop practical, innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver cable engineering solutions from initial feasibility through to detailed design, managing the technical aspects of cable systems and associated equipment for projects of significant value and complexity.
• Prepare comprehensive engineering specifications and designs, assess submissions, and ensure all work complies with current legislation, policies, and operational requirements.
• Drive the resolution of statutory, land, and consent matters for underground cable routes, while recommending construction and outage programmes.
• Prepare and review cable drawings and technical specifications for construction and procurement, maintaining control of all documentation issued to Project Delivery and Pre-Contract Teams.
• Provide specialist input to resolve site and construction cable issues, investigate common faults to prevent recurrence, and conduct assessments for cable works and suppliers.
• Promote industry best practice and technological advances, evaluating new ideas, equipment, and materials that deliver cost savings, improved efficiency, and enhanced safety.
• Liaise with global multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.
• Supervise and mentor less experienced staff within the department or project team.
• Contribute to training needs assessments and help develop technical, operational, and safety packages for new products and innovations.
