Job summary

SP Energy Networks is seeking a Senior Cable Design Engineer to shape the development of high‑voltage cable systems across 33kV to 132kV networks, serving North Wales and North West England.

Based in Prenton with hybrid working, the role leads HV cable projects, designs, ensures CDM and safety compliance, mentors teammates, and collaborates with global engineering teams to deliver reliable energy infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Degree in an Engineering discipline or equivalent practical experience in high-voltage cable engineering.
• Significant proven experience in an accountable position working with high-voltage power cables and associated equipment.
• Ability to implement, apply, and promote CDM and Health & Safety best practice within a design environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver cable engineering solutions from initial feasibility through to detailed design, managing the technical aspects of cable systems and associated equipment for projects of significant value and complexity.
• Prepare comprehensive engineering specifications and designs, assess submissions, and ensure all work complies with current legislation, policies, and operational requirements.
• Drive the resolution of statutory, land, and consent matters for underground cable routes, while recommending construction and outage programmes.
• Prepare and review cable drawings and technical specifications for construction and procurement, maintaining control of all documentation issued to Project Delivery and Pre-Contract Teams.
• Provide specialist input to resolve site and construction cable issues, investigate common faults to prevent recurrence, and conduct assessments for cable works and suppliers.
• Promote industry best practice and technological advances, evaluating new ideas, equipment, and materials that deliver cost savings, improved efficiency, and enhanced safety.
• Liaise with global multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.
• Supervise and mentor less experienced staff within the department or project team.
• Contribute to training needs assessments and help develop technical, operational, and safety packages for new products and innovations
