Job summary

National Grid plc is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead technical decisions across major construction programmes in the UK energy sector. The role is hybrid and can be based at our Warwick office or in Ashford, Sellindge, depending on location.

You will provide senior technical leadership from development through to commissioning, challenge designs for safety and constructability, and mentor engineers across project teams to deliver complex energy infrastructure with minimised risk.

Qualifications

• Significant engineering experience in electrical transmission or major infrastructure environments.
• Strong knowledge of asset design, construction methodologies, testing, commissioning and operational interfaces.
• Ability to identify technical risks and ambiguities in designs and specifications.
• Deep understanding of constructability, safe systems of work, outage management and energisation requirements.
• Ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive evidence-based decisions.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical issues into actionable recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Provide senior technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle from development and design through construction, commissioning and handover.
• Challenge and influence designs to ensure safety, constructability, maintainability and operational effectiveness.
• Review technical specifications, standards, testing requirements and tender documentation for risks and gaps.
• Support supplier selection by assessing technical compliance, constructability and commissioning approaches.
• Lead technical input into outage planning, commissioning activities, switching interfaces and work sequencing.
• Ensure engineering changes are effectively managed with governance and stakeholder engagement.
• Identify programme dependencies, technical risks and opportunities to optimise construction activities and outages.
• Mentor engineers across project and development teams to share knowledge and reduce rework.
